Today is Thursday of Week 6. For many of you, today is Storytelling Day. Maybe you can make a snow-and-ice version of a story, inspired by Oklahoma's inclement weather! Here is a link to the Week 6 assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Work ahead!. The single best success strategy in this class is to work ahead, so if the snow day today has freed up some time you would have spent in classes on campus, you can put that to good use getting ahead in this class, giving you room to maneuver later this semester.

Project Stack. Yesterday, I replied to projects turned in before 8PM on Sunday, and today I'll carry on with the Sunday assignments. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your project, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. For those of who like doing research, there's a story planning option you can do this week if you did a story post last week, and to get a sense of how a story planning post works, take a look at Arianna's Aladdin post: Story Planning: Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

Myth Item. I am a fan of creative maps, and this example by Martin Vargic is brilliant: Map Of Literature.

India Video: There are a lot of writers in India today who are re-imagining the epics, and one of the most fascinating (to me) is Kavita Kane, who is writing novels based on the women of the epics; here is a video interview with her: Lanka's Princess, Vamp or Winner? There is also this interview online: Why Feminism in Indian mythology matters today.

Myth Book Online: Today's free book is a selection of jataka tales: Hindu Fairy Tales by Florence Griswold. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by Helen Jacobs:

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb is from Kashmir, where they know all about snow: Wealth comes like the falling snow; wealth goes like the melting snow. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: Keep on writing and, who knows, you might become . . . a writer.

H.E.A.R.T.: So, yes, writing can be dangerous... but creativity has some pluses too: 12 Benefits of Creativity.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to try hard: Some effort will be required. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: Here's a fun video about English writing rules:: Grammar Lessons with Food. My favorite part is the man-eating chicken:

Event on Campus: Campus is closed again today, so stay safe and warm at home! (OU Daily photo from last winter):

February 22: Zitkala-Sa. Today marks the birthday in 1876 of the Lakota writer, Zitkala-Sa ("Red Bird"). You can read more about her life and career at Wikipedia. The University of Oklahoma Press recently published a biography of this amazing woman and writer: Red Bird, Red Power: The Life and Legacy of Zitkála-Šá. You can read her book Old Indian Legends for free online.
