Saturday, March 3

Today is Saturday of Week 7. I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Midway through the semester like this, school can feel kind of overwhelming... which makes the weekend even more welcome!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: SLEEP. If you want to learn more about why it is important (i.e. really really really important!) to get enough sleep, then do one of the sleep research challenges for H.E.A.R.T. extra credit. And take a look at the infographic below too. :-)

Project Stack. Many people are adding new stories to their projects this weekend, which means next week I will have a LOT of stories to comment on. If you want comments back sooner rather than later, turn in your project today; don't wait until Sunday! I'll update the stack periodically over the weekend so you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I really enjoy seeing the research people do for the story planning posts, and one that I noticed this week was in Baylie's blog: Hidden in the Himalayas. Look at the cool footprint she found that is supposedly that of Hanuman himself:

Word from India. You might be surprised to find out that this common word in English comes from India: TANK.

Myth Video: I wanted to share this video from Crash Course because of the Anansi reading units in the African part of the UnTextbook: Introduction to Tricksters.

India Comic Book: Today's comic book is one of my personal favorites among the Mahabharata comic books: Uloopi: The Naga Princess who Fell in Love with Arjuna. See the Amar Chitra Katha blog for the Bizzell Reserve call number and more information.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb is a great "growth mindset" type of proverb from the Congo: Little by little grow the bananas. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: What is your Punctuation Personality? I guess I am mostly a semi-colon, with a dash of dash!

H.E.A.R.T.: Speaking of sleep: What Happens When Your Brain Doesn't Sleep.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is looking for a new adventure this weekend: Do things you've never done before. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: This video has some great writing advice: Beware of Zombie Nouns. Find out more at Zombie Nouns.

Event on Campus: At the Fred Jones Museum of Art today, 1PM-3PM, there will be a roundtable on the advocacy of Native female artists, featuring artists Holly Wilson, Molly Murphy-Adams and Anita Fields (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 3: Hinamatsuri. Today, March 3, is the Hinamatsuri holiday in Japan, the "Doll Festival," which is a festival of good luck for young girls. You can read more about the holiday in this Wikipedia article. This image shows a Hinamatsuri doll displayed at the festival in 2005 in the city of Kounos, near Tokyo:
