Sunday, March 11

Today is Sunday of Week 8. There are the usual end-of-week assignments for Week 8, and maybe you will try some extra credit also! You can find all the assignments for Week 8 and also for Week 9 (if you want to get a head start) at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Experiment with new technology. Something new I just learned about recently is a video sharing space called Flipgrid. Try it, and see what you think! You could even add a Flipgrid video to your Introduction blog post if you want (there's a tip specifically for adding a Flipgrid video to a blog post). Find out more in the Flipgrid Tech Tip options.

Project Stack. Some of you have a free pass for Week 8, and some of you will be turning in a project assignment, and as usual I'll be updating the stack periodically this weekend as your emails come in. You can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I was excited to see that Jency had tried the Google Art Project for Chrome tech tip. That is one of my favorite Chrome extensions; it's a great way to add art to your browser. Find out more: Google Art Tip. Here's the artwork that has shown up in my new tabs for today: Stonehenge at Twilight.

Words from India. The lovely English word SERENDIPITY comes via Arabic from one of the old Sanskrit names for the place known today as Sri Lanka:

Myth Video: Those of you in Myth-Folklore can use these Crash Course videos for extra credit reading any week: The Mwindo Epic. (If you are in the Indian Epics course, you have all kinds of Epified videos you can watch for extra credit reading.)

India Comic Book: Today's comic book is Ashwini Kumars: Tales of Devotion from the Vedas. See the Amar Chitra Katha blog for the Bizzell Reserve call number and more information. Those of you in Indian Epics can use these comic books for extra credit reading, and this one is indirectly connected to the Mahabharata: the twin Ashwins are the divine fathers of the Pandava twins Nakula and Sahadeva.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb is from China: One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: This is a gorgeous infographic about the 69 Rules of Punctuation.

H.E.A.R.T.: Telling stories is important, and so is listening to stories... and then there are the untold stories.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to open up: Stay creative: be open. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: Here's a video about using your creativity to build a world: How to build a fictional world.

Event on Campus: There's still time to come see the Week of Women at the Fred Jones Museum; the exhibit closes today (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.
March 11: Douglas Adams. Today marks the birthday of Douglas Adams, one of my most beloved writers, who sadly left this world in 2001. Adams is most famous as the creator of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and his two books about the detective Dirk Gently are also marvelous. Happy birthday to you, Douglas Adams, wherever in the galaxy you may be! Here is a YouTube video interview where Douglas Adams talks about his career, life, the universe, and everything:

And don't forget about Daylight Savings: SPRING FORWARD, Fall Back. Since I included a Stonehenge image above already, I thought I would share this daylight savings time cartoon by Theresa McCracken:
