Tuesday, March 12

Today is Tuesday of Week 9. Here is a link to the Week 9 assignments and also a link to Week 10 for those of you who are working ahead. I hope you will enjoy this week's reading!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Spring Break! Spring Break is next week (yay!), so what that means for Week 9 is that you have the regular Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday assignments due this week as usual. Then, Week 9 lasts until Sunday, March 24 (the Sunday at the end of Spring Break). So, that means you can turn in the end-of-week assignments this weekend, or you can do that over the Break, whatever is most convenient for you.

Project Stack. If you turned in something last week before Saturday at noon, you should have comments back from me, and I'll keep working on the Saturday assignments today. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. You can make memes to go with your own stories, like Alena did here with a hilarious meme for her story of the monkey and the crocodile: Mrs. Crocodile Needs to Vent.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is One Hundred Poems of Kabir as translated by Rabindranath Tagore, one of India's greatest poets.

Featured Storybook. The jackal is a trickster in some African cultures; you can learn about his antics here: Jackals of Telekeshi: Tales of the Watering Hole. This particular jackal is a known troublemaker, and the lion, baboon, and giraffe all have stories to tell about him.

Myth Video. The West African trickster Anansi also became famous in the Caribbean: Anansi the Spider.

India Video. Here's another video from Epified: Epic Disguises.

India Item. And here is a proverb from IndiaWhen the house is built, the carpenter is forgotten.

Writing. Pangrams use all the letters of the alphabet: English Pangrams. My favorite is: The five boxing wizards jump quickly. But the quick brown fox jumping over the lazy dog is the most famous:

And here is some reading advice from Hermione: When in doubt, go to the library!

Growth Mindset Cats. This cat is ready to read: I will train my brain by reading books.

Event on Campus. Come to the Gallery Room in Gould from 5PM-7PM for the opening night of the exhibit "Invisible Eve" by Yousef Khanfar, featuring women incarcerated in Oklahoma (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 12: Terry Pratchett. Today is the anniversary of the death in 2015 of Terry Pratchett, one of my own favorite authors. Pratchett is best known for his Discworld fantasy series of novels, and you can find out more about his life and career at Wikipedia. He is also the co-author, with Neil Gaiman, of the novel Good Omens which is coming out in May as a TV series on BBC-Amazon!

This image comes from an obituary: We Love You, Terry Pratchett.
