Wednesday, April 3

Today is Wednesday of Week 11. Here is a link to the Week 11 assignments and also Week 12 if you are working ahead.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. If you turned in your assignment before noon on Sunday, you should have comments back from me, and I'll keep on working on Sunday assignments today. You can always check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Writing Center. The OU Writing Center is a fantastic resource for this class, for any other class you are taking, plus any other kind of writing you might be doing, like a graduate school statement of purpose or a scholarship application. Find out more at the Writing Center website: Hours and Locations.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. I really like this motivational poster that Alena made: Climbing the Mountain.

Free Book Online. Today's free book is The Magic Bed: A Book of East Indian Fairy-Tales by Hartwell James.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is Favorite Fairy Tales by Logan Marshall.

Featured Storybook. This project is from Indian Epics last year: To Love and Lose: Hidimbi's Story. The story of the rakshasi Hidimbi and the Pandava hero Bhima is one of the most dramatic subplots of the Mahabharata!

India Video. Some of you in Indian Epics have been reading Noor Inayat's book of jataka tales, so I wanted to share this trailer for a movie about her life as a British spy during World War II: Enemy of the Reich: The Noor Inayat Khan Story.

Myth Video. These video clips of Native American dancers date back to 1894, as filmed for Thomas Edison's Black Maria studio.

Myth Item. Today's saying is Speak of the devil and he will appear (an English proverb). Find out more at the Proverb Lab. This proverb is often shortened to "Speak of the devil."

India Item: Today's word from India is CANDY, which comes to English via Arabic qandi and Sanskrit khanda. For details, see this blog post. Here is a cotton candy seller in Tamil Nadu:

And here's a thought about reading good books: Most of what makes a book "good" is that we are reading it at the right moment for us.

I saw a powerful message yesterday at Twitter from J. D. Baker, a recent OU graduate and student body president, and that prompted me to share here a video he made several years ago as part of a series at the Daily: OU Daily on Mental Health.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to fight the monsters: Confront your fears. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus. You have another chance this evening to come hear the Me Too Monologues in a performance at 7PM in Meacham ... Moriah from Myth-Folklore is part of the show this year! (details) Here's what Moriah told me about the show:  I think the stories are very important and meaningful, so I'd love it if more students came out to hear them!

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 3: Bud Fisher. Today marks the birthday of Bud Fisher in 1885, the creator of the cartoon strip "Mutt and Jeff," which was the first daily comic strip to appear in an American newspaper (the San Francisco Chronicle). You can read more about Bud Fisher and his career as a cartoonist in this Wikipedia article. There is also a long article about the Mutt and Jeff series itself. Below is a self-portrait by Fisher - you can see he is carrying his two famous characters, Mutt and Jeff, one in each hand!
