Sunday, October 27

Happy Weekend! Today is Sunday of Week 10. If you haven't finished with Week 10, today is the day to do that: Week 10 assignments. And if you're ready to just keep on going, here's a link to Week 11.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Famous Last Words. Especially as you finish up these last weeks of the semester (and perhaps the last weeks of your undergraduate career!), the Famous Last Words extra credit option is a great way to take some time to think back and reflect on the week gone by, and also on the adventures you have ahead.

Project Stack. I'll update the stack periodically today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your email, and on Monday I'll start replying to the assignments in order (starting with the items from Thursday and Friday of last week).

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. For a mindset challenge, Brianna made a mindset mantra about overthinking. I like this metaphor!

Twitter Stream. You probably know about the urban legends website Snopes.com, and they've got lots of scary stories for Halloween, like this one from San Antonio that they shared at Twitter:

Indian Epics Today. The character for today is the goddess Lakshmi, who is the goddess of prosperity. Find out more here: Lakshmi.

Here is a video about Lakshmi from the Epified YouTube channel:

Myth-Folklore Video. And speaking of goddesses, here's a Crash Course video: Great Goddesses.

Story of the Day. Today's "why" story is Why the Clay is Red, an eerie African American folktale:

Storybooks. Starting today, I'll share a Storybook here in the announcements each day. Here's one from Myth-Folklore last semester, all about tigers: To Have a Tiger by the Tale.

Proverbs. And here's a proverb from India about a tiger: Beware the tiger who offers you a golden bracelet. He may be offering you a gift, but he really just wants to gobble you up!

H.E.A.R.T.. The weekend is always a good time to Practice the Pause.

HEART Video. And if you want to expand your mind as you pause and reflect, here is the amazing Alan Watts, with music from Hans Zimmer: Life from Above.

Event on Campus. There will be a matinee performance at 3PM today of The Wolves in the Weitzenhoffer Theatre on Elm (details).

October 27: Diwali. One of the most festive celebrations in the Hindu calendar is Diwali, the "Festival of Lights" which you can read about at Wikipedia. The word Diwali is a contraction of "Deepawali," which means "row of lamps," and one of the Diwali rituals is the lighting of candles and lamps to symbolize the triumph of light over the dark. The image below shows a Diwali festival in Chandigarh, India.

You will see lots about Diwali at Twitter today, and here's a video from Epified: Diwali:
