Thursday, October 17

Today is Thursday of Week 9. Here is a link to the Week 9 assignments. For many of you, today is storytelling day, and I hope you have fun with that! Tomorrow I'll be able to update the randomizer with all those new stories. :-)

Class Procedures and Reminders

Finishing the class. I am pleased to announce that Madeleine P. in Myth-Folklore has finished the class, thanks to a combination of starting early and extra credit. So, if you're curious to see a blog with a semester's worth of posts (she has 52 posts there), here it is: Madeleine's blog. Congratulations, Madeleine!

Project Stack. If you turned in something before 6PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me now, and I think I might finish up the Sunday items today. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Some of you in Myth-Folklore have been reading about the Monkey-King, and I wanted to share this picture of a Monkey-King figurine that Conner found and used in his reading notes: I like how his magical staff, the Ruyi Jingu Bang, seems like it is coming right out of the picture!

Twitter Stream. As soon as I saw this Twitter video, I knew I had to share it. This is a cat looking at its to-do list, ha ha:

Story of the Day. The "why" story for today is about the bear, and Why the Bear Has No Tail. Yes, of course it's Brer Rabbit's fault once again, with some help from the turtles.

Indian Epics Today. The epic character for today is Ashwatthama, the son of Drona and one of the Chiranjivi, or the Immortals. More about Ashwatthama, and here's a video about him from Epified:

Storybooks. And here's an Indian Epics Storybook from last year about The Chiranjivi.

Myth-Folklore Video. Some of you have been learning about Anansi in Myth-Folklore this week, so here's an Anansi video.

Proverbs. This is a Congolese proverb about hospitality from Africa: When the bee comes to your house, let her have beer; you may want to visit the bee’s house some day.

Writing. Many of you are writing a story today, so here's some comma humor to keep in mind: punctuation saves lives!

Mindset Cats. The mindset cat knows that reviewing is part of growth. In other words: proofread! :-)

Writing Video. Yes, fonts are part of the writing experience, especially online, so here's some font humor from Saturday Night Live: Papyrus.

Event on Campus. There will be a free screening of the film Rafiki in the Cross Theater at 5PM today (details).

October 17: Karva Chauth. Today is the northern Indian festival of Karva Chauth. You can find out more at Wikipedia, and this holiday was also the subject of an Indian Epics Storybook in a previous class: Lifelong Devotion: Tales of Love at Karva Chauth.

If you follow the Twitter today for Karva Chauth, you will see some extraordinary mehndi designs, like these:
