Wednesday, January 15

Today is Wednesday of Week 1. Congratulations to everybody for getting your blog set up! Here is a link to this week's assignments, and today you will be exploring the Storybook projects from past semesters. I hope that will start to give you some ideas for your own project in this class! (If you didn't finish the Tuesday tasks yesterday, the grace period is open this morning in Canvas too.)

Class Procedures and Reminders

My schedule today. I'll be away from my desk on and off for much of the afternoon today, so I might be slower than usual to respond to any emails, but don't worry: I will get caught up on replying to any questions you might have tomorrow, but definitely send emails or Canvas messages with your questions and I will get back to you by the end of the day!

Blog network. The blog stream is very lively now, full of new posts popping up! There's a "blogs" link in the Canvas left-hand navigation menu, so you can take a look and see what people are posting in (almost) real time, and you can see both classes side by side here: Blog Stream.

Blog comments. My goal this week is to comment on all the favorite places posts, and I will also comment on as many of the Introduction posts as I can (and then I'll carry on with those posts next week). Meanwhile, for those of you who are working ahead, the Week 2 blog commenting assignment is ready to go now too where you will be commenting on each other's Introductions.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. There are so many great pictures people are including in their favorite places posts, like this one from Camille: Thin Air and a Chance of Bears. Yes, she took that picture of bears in Alaska! Wow!

Twitter Stream. From Lapham's Quarterly at Twitter, here's a mythological map: Earthly paradises in folktales and fables (click the title for a larger view). It includes the Garden of Eden, Cockaigne, Shambhala, Big Rock Candy Mountain, Land of Prester John, and Avalon.

Indian Epics. The epic character today is the god Vishnu, who you can see here holding his famous chakra (discus) weapon in one hand:

Vishnu has many avatars, and his ten main avatars are called the Dashavatar, The Ten-Avatars:

Storybooks. Starting today, I'll share a Storybook here in the announcements each day. Here's one from Myth-Folklore last year, all about tigers: To Have a Tiger by the Tale.

Proverbs. And here's a proverb from India about a tiger: Beware the tiger who offers you a golden bracelet. He may be offering you a gift, but he really just wants to gobble you up!

100-Word Stories. Today's story is a fable from India: The Hermit in the Forest (click title for more info).

HEART Video. I know a lot of you are planning on going into medicine, so I thought you might enjoy this video: Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care.

Event on Campus. There is breakfast pass-out and lunch-pass out for Winter Welcome Week on the South Oval from 8AM-9:30AM and 1PM-2:30PM today.

January 15: Wikipedia Day. It's Wikipedia's birthday today, because the first-ever edit of Wikipedia took place on January 15, 2001. That means Wikipedia is 19 years old today! Find out more at Wikipedia. Happy Birthday, Wikipedia!

Check out the Twitter stream for information and fun stuff during the day, or click here for past announcements.
