Saturday, September 5

Today is Saturday of Week 2. Welcome to the weekend! Here is a link to Week 2 for those of you who are finishing up Week 2 over the weekend, and Week 3 is ready to go too... and getting ahead on the week-to-come is always a good idea!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. As project assignments come in over the weekend, I'll periodically update the stack so you can check the stack to make sure I received your project form. Then, on Tuesday (after the Labor Day holiday), I'll be replying to the projects in the order received.

Tech Tips: Canvas. There are a lot of different Tech Tip options, and the Canvas tips can be really helpful at the start of the semester, like setting up your Canvas notifications. There are also tips on customizing your blog.

Comments. You should all start getting comments on your Intros this weekend as people start doing the Week 2 comment assignment. You can do the Week 3 comment assignment too if you want; that randomizer is full of stories now! I hope you will enjoy learning about each other and sharing your stories each week this semester. There's also extra credit commenting each week for those of you who enjoy the social aspect of the class. (I'll be finishing up my comments on the Intros next week too!)

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. SV is thinking about doing a project based on different Asian mythological traditions, and one of the stories she is looking at is the motif of the world turtle, as shown here: with elephants also!

One of SV's interests is finding connections to Avatar: The Last Airbender, so I wanted to share this article from the New York Times when the show returned to Netlifx this summer: ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Imagines a World Free of Whiteness.

Twitter stream. There was something at Twitter that was REALLY exciting for me: someone read from my Tiny Tales of India book as part of a Bollywood music podcast. I was so excited to be part of her podcast: Vidhi's Bollywood Jukebox.

And here's something from OU professor Jennifer Barnes, who has a brand-new book out; this is her essay about imagination during the pandemic: Imaginary Friends in Lockdown.

Storybook. Instead of a Storybook from a past class, I am excited to announce another new Storybook for this semester: Jaicee has her website set up... with stories coming soon! Love Island Gone Wrong. And in just a couple weeks, there will be lots more websites to share!

100-Word Stories. This is one of the stories that Vidhi read during the podcast! The Blue Jackal;  this is just me reading. :-)

And here's something from India that might surprise you: the English word "shampoo" comes to English from Hindi! Shampoo and Champoe.

And here's a word in English from Greek mythology: Labyrinth.

Some of you will be starting Greek mythology in Week 3 for Myth-Folklore, so here's a cool Crash Course video: Pantheons of the Greeks and Romans.

September 5: Teacher's Day. Today is celebrated as Teacher's Day in India in honor of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a philosopher and writer, and he was also the president of India from 1962-1967; Radhakrishnan was born on this day in 1888. You can read more about his life and career at Wikipedia. This graphic shows Radhakrishnan and the words of the Guru Mantra.

And here's a beautiful performance of the Guru Mantra with Shankar Tucker on clarinet:
