Tuesday, September 22

Today is Tuesday of Week 5. Here is a link to Week 5, and I hope you will enjoy the new readings this week! It's a new take on the Ramayana in Indian Epics, and a switch to the Middle East and India in the Myth-Folklore class.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project lists
. Thanks again to everybody for all these great websites! I've started making the class lists for Myth-Folklore and Indian Epics, and also a slideshow of the projects that are ready for comments; I'll keep adding to the slideshow as the projects take shape. You can see a tiny version of the slideshow in the sidebar of this blog, and I've also embedded it here. For those of you who are working ahead, this means the Week 6 Feedback is ready to go too. :-)

Project Stack. As always at the start of the week, the stack is HUGE. If you turned in something before noon on Saturday, you should have comments back from me now, and I'll be working on the Saturday items today. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your project.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog stream. It's fun seeing what people do with their comment wall post, and Ava found this sparkly animated image!

Twitter stream. For those of you interested in the foods of India, here's a nice article I saw at Scroll.in online: Indians of all faiths commemorate the dead with food.

I also learned about this lecture from Harvard Art Museum (on Zoom) about Greek Sirens: Crying Fowl—The Scary Truth about Ancient Sirens.

Storybook. Some of you in Myth-Folklore will be reading Egyptian stories this week, so here's an Egyptian Storybook: Waffle House: Creating Magic in Ancient Egypt.

And here's a Crash Course video about Egyptian and other Mediterranean Pantheons.

100-Word Stories. And also in the spirit of the Middle East, here's another Sufi legend about Muhammad and the Eagle.

Are you into emojis? Some new emojis are coming to the Unicode emoji collection.

And here's a charming graphic: going through things differently.

September 22: Equinox. Today is the autumnal equinox, so it is the first day of Fall, and now the days will be shorter than the nights; you can learn more about the astronomical details at Wikipedia. In the Wiccan "Wheel of the Year" (see image below), the arrival of Fall is celebrated as the holiday of Mabon, while in the southern hemisphere, it is the corresponding spring holiday of Ostara. You can check out the #Mabon Twitter stream today; that's where I found these Mabon graphics.
