Wednesday, August 29

Today is Wednesday of WEEK 2 of the class. Wednesday morning, until noon, is the grace period if you forgot to do any of the assignments that were due on Tuesday.

Storybook Stack. If you turned in an assignment by 5PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me and points recorded in the Gradebook. If you turned in your assignment later on Sunday or on Monday or Tuesday, it may still be in the stack. You can always check the stack to make sure I have your assignment, so you don't have to worry about whether or not I got your email. Meanwhile, if you want comments back on your assignment sooner, the thing to do is to turn it in sooner - I read through the stack and reply to the assignments in the order received.

Writing Tip Wednesday. Last week, I shared some tips from the world of literary writing (Neil Gaiman: 8 Good Writing Practices). This week, I want a share a great list of tips from the world of business writing and quite a few of these tips apply to literary writing and academic writing just as much as they do to the world of business: 10 Tips on Writing from David Ogilvy. One very good one: Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning — and then edit it. For academic writing, you could restate that as follows: Never turn in a paper or other writing assignment on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning — and then edit it. :-)

You really can call me Laura! Some of you still seem to feel like you need to call me Professor or Dr. or something like that. No need for that, really! (Plus, I am just an instructor and not a professor, so I don't want to get in trouble with the professor police, ha ha.) Anyway, since I'm on a first-name basis with all of you, please do the same and just call me Laura.

Wednesday Events on Campus. From 11:30AM-12:30PM in the Union lobby, there will be FREE Lemon Chills (time/location/details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online. As you can see, I share a lot of Union events because the UPB is really good about adding their events to the campus calendar. If you are a member of a student organization, make sure your organization lists its upcoming events in the calendar in order to spread the word!

August 29: Ingres. Today marks the birthday in the year 1780 of the great French Neoclassical painter, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. You can read more about Ingres' life and career in this Wikipedia article. He painted many mythological subjects; one of his most famous paintings is this depiction of Oedipus and the Sphinx; you can read about the Oedipus legend here.
