Sunday, February 16

Today is Sunday of Week 5. The Read and Respond assignment, along with the Internet assignment and Storybook assignment, are due today. So, if you have not finished those up already, now is the time.

Class Procedures and Reminders:

Storybook Stack. I don't update the Storybook stack as often on the weekends, but I'll update it at least once or twice. If you want comments back on your assignment sooner rather than later, turn in your work earlier on Sunday rather than waiting until later. If you wait until Sunday evening, you will be farther down in the stack and will have to wait longer for my comments back to you.

Tech Tips. For those of you looking for new Tech Tips, I added a few new ones focused on using a Blogger blog in combination with Pinterest and with Twitter. You'll see them in the new Blogger section of the Tech Tip list.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Writing Help: For all your writing, it's good to know how to do a spellcheck and a wordcount. This page can help: Word Counter, Spellchecker, and Plain Text Box.

Writing Resource. If you stop using inflated phrases, your writing will be more powerful, and you will have less trouble with the maximum word count: Inflated v. Concise.

Foreign Words in English: Today's foreign word in English is thug, a word which comes from India. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Tokyo Underworld. Orimi works for the Urban Legend Department of the Tokyo police force, and she has a gruesome murder to solve. You'll have to pay close attention while she interrogates Teke-Teke, Tanuki, Kuchisake-Onna, Jinmenken, and The Professor if you want to find the murderer!

FREE Kindle eBook: The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Here is a link to the book at Amazon, and this blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book. There is so much more to this book than what you might have seen in the Disney film!

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is A blunt wedge will sometimes do what a sharp axe will not (an English proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. In other words, there's more than one way to split a log!

Ramayana Image: Today's Ramayana image shows Vali and Sugriva fighting. You can see Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman watching from behind the tree.

Sunday Event on Campus: There will be a matinee performance of the musical The Drowsy Chaperone at 3PM in the Rupel Jones Theater on Elm Avenue (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.
