Saturday, March 29

Today is Saturday of Week 10. I hope you are having a nice weekend! If you did not finish up the end-of-week assignments on Friday, you need to do that today or tomorrow, Sunday.

Class Procedures and Reminders:

Storybooks. I managed to get through all the assignments turned in before Friday; if you turned something in on Friday, it will be at the top of the stack on Monday. You can check the contents of the stack here, and I'll update the listing at least once or twice over the weekend.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Writing Resource: Cutting the Fat. If you want to learn some more "short-and-sweet" writing strategies, this article has lots of good ideas!

Words to Watch: Today's words to watch out for are WAIST and WASTE. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Italian Love Story: how I Met Your Mother. Italian fairy tales... updated for the modern world of American television thanks to Ellen's Storybook for this semester.

FREE Kindle eBook: Celtic Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs. Here is a link to the book at Amazon, and this blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book. There are some marvelous stories in here; one of my favorites is "Beth Gellert."

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is A thousand probabilities do not make one truth (an English proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. I'm a fan of randomness and probabilities, but that's not the same as TRUTH, of course, as this proverb points out.

Mahabharata Image: Today's Mahabharata image is Dhritarashtra attacking Bhima or, rather, the statue of Bhima.

Saturday Event on Campus: Today is Undergraduate Research Day; come by Wagner Hall from 8:30AM - noon to learn about the resesarch work of your fellow students (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 29: Lucy Lawless. Today is the birthday of Lucy Lawless, the New Zealand actress most famous for her role as Xena the Warrior Princess, although my favorite of her roles is the Number Three Cylon in Battlestar Galactica! Happy Birthday, Lucy!
