Thursday, November 6

Today is Thursday of WEEK 12. If you have not turned in your Week 11 Storybook/Portfolio assignment yet, you have until noon today to turn that in for partial credit, and Thursday morning until noon is also the grace period if you did not finish the Storytelling that was due on Wednesday — and if you missed them yesterday, here's a link to Wednesday's announcements.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Out of Office. I will be out of the office most of the day on Thursday, so if you send me an email, I will get back to you on Thursday evening if it is something urgent; otherwise, I might not get back to you until Friday morning. I'm having follow-up from some eye surgery last summer; so, I'm not really sure what to expect on Thursday, but I hope to be back at work as usual on Friday!

Storybook/Portfolio Stack. There are still quite a few items in the stack. If you turned something in on Sunday, you should have comments back from me; if you turned something in on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, it is probably still in the stack. You can check to make sure your assignment is in the stack here.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Dr. Seuss. These words of wisdom apply to readers young and old:

Words to Watch: Today's words to watch out for are AISLE and ISLE. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Living in the Past: Tales of Ancient Vietnam. Vinh, a Vietnamese-American teenager on vacation with his parents in Vietnam, finds himself pulled into a mysterious fantasy world where he meets four powerful dragons and a beautiful young woman named Sen.

FREE Kindle eBook: The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Here is a link to the book at Amazon, and this blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book which is a sequel to Kipling's first Jungle Book.

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is Arthur himself had but his time (an English proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. So, if Arthur had but his time, so it is true of us all.

Mahabharata Image: Today's Mahabharata image is Arjuna. This is a state of Arjuna in Bali, Indonesia.

Thursday Event on Campus: There will be an Adobe Creative Cloud presentation from 11AM to 1PM at the OU IT Store on Boyd (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

November 6: Suleiman. Today marks the birthday in 1494 of Suleiman I, known as Suleiman the Magnificent, who ruled the Ottoman Empire as Sultan from 1520 to 1566, which was the peak of the Ottoman Empire's power. Suleiman was also famous for his cultural achievements, in addition to being a poet himself. You can read more about his life and career at Wikipedia. The beautiful Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, built in 1558 under the Sultan's orders, is still one of the most magnificent sights to see in that city.
