Wednesday, November 19

Today is Wednesday of WEEK 14. If you have not turned in your Week 13 Storybook/Portfolio assignment yet, you may still do that for partial credit, and Wednesday morning, until noon, is the grace period if you did not finish the Reading Diary that was due on Tuesday — and if you missed them yesterday, here's a link to Tuesday's announcements.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Storybook Ballots. I've tallied up the nominations that people turned in (many thanks to everybody who participated in that part of the process!), and you can see the nominations for each class here: Storybook Ballot. The ballot contains links to the Storybooks nominated in your class, and maybe you will want to visit the Storybooks in the other class too! For each class, you will find the actual ballot for voting in Desire2Learn in Week 14. This is just for fun - not for a grade or anything. If you have a few minutes to spare, please vote for your own personal favorites. The ballot will be available until 5PM on Thursday of this week, and I'll announce the results on Friday.

Storybook stack. If you turned in a Storybook assignment on Friday or Saturday, you should have comments back from me. If you turned in your assignment on Sunday or Monday, your assignment is still in the stack; you can check the contents of the stack to make sure I have received your email. Meanwhile, if the points for that assignment will give you the points you need to finish the class, send me a separate email to let me know, and I'll put your Storybook at the top of the stack.

Thanksgiving Break. (repeat announcement) You will be getting a full week off for Thanksgiving in this class. Thanksgiving falls on November 27 this year, which means it is very late in the semester. So, you will have all the regular M-T-W-Th assignments in Week 14 on the regular schedule this week. Then, after the Thursday assignments on November 20, the remaining Week 14 assignments are not due until after Thanksgiving, with the usual grace period on Monday, December 1. I hope that makes sense; if you have any questions, please ask!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Tech-Meditation. Tech tranquility for the end of the semester!

Words to Watch: Today's words to watch out for are ARC and ARK. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Legends of Fire. Deep in the woods is a tavern, and sitting around a table in that tavern are four wild-looking men: dragon-hunters! Listen to the stories of what happened when they confronted mighty dragons all over the world, from Scotland to Turkey to India.

FREE Kindle eBook: The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Here is a link to the book at Amazon, and this blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book. You probably know the characters from the cartoon version!

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is Waste not, want not (an English proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. This is one of my favorite English proverbs: such good advice, and such a pretty little poem, just four words long.

Mahabharata Image: Today's Mahabharata image is Draupadi, the Pandavas, and Aswatthaman. If you look closely, you can see that Aswatthaman is bleeding after the precious gem has been removed from his forehead.

Wednesday Event on Campus: There will be a performance by the Sooner Bassooners at 8PM in the Pitman Recital Hall at Catlett Music Center (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

November 19: Jami. Today, November 19, marks the death of the great Persian poet, Jami, in the year 1492. Many consider Jami to have been the last of the Sufi master poets in a centuries-long tradition that includes another famous Persian poet, Rumi. One of Jami's greatest works was a novel-in-verse about Yusuf and Zulaikha, that is, about Joseph and Potiphar's wife, who goes by the name of Zulaikha in the Islamic tradition. You can read more about Jami in this Wikipedia article, which is also the source for this image from an illustrated manuscript of one of his mystical works, The Rose Garden:
