Today is MONDAY of Orientation Week, the first week of class for Fall 2015! Here is the assignments list, and you have assignments due on Tuesday, so I hope you can get started today if you have not started already. Let me know if you have any questions!

Meanwhile, there are some other items below which I hope you will enjoy and/or find useful; there will be new announcements each day of the semester with information about the class and also with these extra items for your reading pleasure.

These items are for FUN and EXPLORATION:

Imagine the Box. Here is some advice, not so much to think "outside" the box, but instead to IMAGINE the box ... is not a box. Imagination is very much what this class is all about. :-)

Mythology Words in English: Today's mythology word in English is COLOSSAL. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Rama and the Other Avatars. Imagine a young boy growing up in Montana who learns... that he is an avatar of Vishnu, a new Rama for the 21st century, with rakshasas (demons) that he must defeat.

Free Book Online: The Orange Fairy Book by Andrew Lang. This blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book, which contains stories you may be familiar with (like The Ugly Duckling) along with many others that are probably new to you.

India Comic Book: The Churning of the Ocean. This blog post provides additional information. The Amar Chitra Katha comic book series is on Reserve in Bizzell, and it will will be part of the reading for Indian Epics this semester — but of course these comic books might be of interest to people in the Myth-Folklore class also. This particular comic book tells a famous Indian creation story in which the god Vishnu takes the form of a beautiful woman, Mohini, and he also takes the form of Kurma, a giant turtle.

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is Paddle your own canoe (an English proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. Don't expect someone else will paddle your canoe for you... and you probably shouldn't try to paddle anyone's canoe but your own, metaphorically speaking.

Today's Video: 29 Ways to Stay Creative. You can see the infographic version in the blog post. I hope you will get a chance this semester to get in touch with all kinds of creative strategies, as well as finding new creative strategies of your own.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is We do things better together. Details at the blog. Even though this is an online class, I hope you will have many chances to learn together with other people in the class by sharing your work with one another.

Event on Campus: There are MANY events going on as part of Howdy Week. Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

Note: You can page back through the older blog posts to see any announcements you might have missed, and you can check out the Twitter stream for information and fun stuff during the day. You'll find the Twitter stream and a link to these announcements in the D2L homepage for the class.
