Thursday, November 5

Today is Thursday of WEEK 11. Thursday morning until noon is the grace period if you did not finish the Storytelling that was due on Wednesday.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project stack update. I'm still working on the Project assignments turned in on Sunday; if you turned in your Project assignment by Sunday at 9PM you should have comments back from me. I hope to finish the rest of the assignments turned in on Sunday today, and then I'll start working on the assignments that were turned in during the Monday grace period and later this week. You can check the stack to make sure I have received your assignment!

Blog commenting. After the grace period ends at noon today, I'll start putting together the new random blog groups for the blog commenting. I'll get that done this afternoon, and then I will update these announcements when the groups are ready to go — the blog groups should be ready by 5PM at the latest.
Update: The blog groups are ready to go with a totally random extra credit option too. :-)

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Interview with a Semicolon. This screenshot is just a sample of the sad semicolon's remarks; find out more at Interview with a Semicolon.

Indian Words in English: Today's word from India in English is SUTTEE, which comes from the name of Sati, the beloved wife of the god Shiva. For details, see this blog post.

Featured Storybook: Robin of Sherwood: Sherwood's Side of the Story. Not only is the Major Oak of Sherwood Forest your surprising storyteller for this Storybook, you will also be amazed at the role the trees themselves played in the traditional Robin Hood legends, a secret which the Major Oak himself reveals to you in his versions of the stories.

Free Book Online: A Book of Old Ballads by Beverley Nichols. This blog post provides additional information about the contents of the book, which includes the ballad of Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne, among others.

India Featured Book: Draupadi: Fire-Born Princess by Saraswati Nagpal. This blog post provides additional information about this reading option for Indian Epics — and, yes, this is the same author who wrote the "Sita" novel that I shared in the announcements yesterday.

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is At a round table every seat is first (a German proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. That's one of the reasons why I like teaching online: in the online classroom, there is no "front" of the room. We are all just on the Internet together!

Today's Video: Easy, featuring Norah Jones, Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale. I just learned from Anoushka Shankar's Facebook that her brand-new album is ready to be released, so I thought I would share some of her music here today! (She and Norah Jones are sisters, both daughters of Ravi Shankar.)

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is working hard because... Even geniuses have to work hard. Details at the blog.

Event on Campus: There will be a performance of Rocky Horror Picture Show at 8PM in the Weitzenhoffer Theatre: That sweet transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his motley crew are having a party of galactic proportions. It’s a kinky, sci-fi funfest rockin’ your galaxy this fall! (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

Note: You can page back through the older blog posts to see any announcements you might have missed, and you can check out the Twitter stream for information and fun stuff during the day.
