Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. On Thursday, I finished reading all the assignments that had been turned in on Sunday. Today I hope to finish everything that was turned in on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. You can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

Favorite Project Nominations! (repeat announcement) The Week 13 Feedback assignment is available now: you will be nominating your favorite Storybooks and Portfolios. Then, on Monday afternoon next week, after everybody has submitted their nominations, I will put up a ballot based on the most nominated projects. Thank you in advance for your input on this: the more people who make nominations, the better the ballot will be!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Why We Need Creative Writing. Here's why:

Indian Words in English: Today's word from India in English is MANGO, which comes via the Portuguese manga, which in turn is from the Tamil word mankay. For details, see this blog post. I thought this would be a fun one to share because it is Hanuman Jayanti (Hanuman's Birthday; see below), and Hanuman was very fond of mangos!

Featured Storybook: Tracking the Werewolf. Our hero, John Abbott, is tracking the werewolf, getting closer and closer . . . until we do indeed see the werewolves through his eyes.

Free Book Online: Mighty Mikko - Finnish Tales by Parker Fillmore. This blog post provides additional information about the stories in this book which include the epic of Mikko the Fox, along with other fairy tales and folktales.

India Featured Book: Brahma Dreaming by John Jackson. This blog post provides additional information about this reading option for Indian Epics. It's available in Bizzell as a book to check out at the regular circulation desk or as an audiobook you can listen to at the Reserve Desk.

Words of Wisdom: Today's proverb poster is A running horse has no need of spurs (a Latin proverb). Details at the Proverb Lab. For those of you who know Latin: Equo currenti non opus calcaribus.

Today's Video: Funky Pawa. This video has some great artwork and animations!

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cats have their eyes open: Look for opportunity! Details at the blog.

Event on Campus: There will be a talk by Prof. Alexander Weheliye, "Hotline Bling: Gendered Technologies in R and B Music," at 3PM in Wallace Old Science Hall 323 (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 22 2016: Hanuman Jayanti. Today is the Hindu festival of Hanuman Jayanti, which commemorates the birth of the monkey god Hanuman. You can find out more about Hanuman at Wikipedia. The image below is a greeting card for Hanuman Jayanti, showing Hanuman as he carries the Medicine Hill: Happy Hanuman's Birthday!
