Class Procedures and Reminders

Week 3 Blog Comments. Each week, I make new blog comments groups at random, so slowly but surely you will be meeting new people in the class, and getting to read new stories too.

Project Stack. I'm finishing up the project assignments that were turned in on Monday and later; I should be able to get through the stack today, and you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Writing. Writing can be a metaphor for life itself: When something goes wrong in your life, just yell, "Plot twist!" and move on.

Reading. One of the most important reasons to read: Reading can seriously damage your ignorance.

Spelling. This spelling error is usually caused by the spellchecker! People type definately... and the spellchecker isn't sure what to do: DEFIANTLY v. DEFINITELY.

Featured Storybook. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Weather Gods. As a traveler in time and space, you will meet the New Zealand storm god Tawhirimatea, the Indian thunder-god Indra who defeated the drought-demon Vritra, along with the Aztec god Tlaloc and the Norse god Thor, famous for his thunder-hammer, Mjolnir.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is one of my personal favorites: The Panchatantra of Vishnu Sharma translated by Arthur W. Ryder. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents.

Words of Wisdom: Today's saying is As the wind, so the sail (a French proverb). Find out more at the Proverb Lab. Once you know which way the wind is blowing, you'll be able to set your sails.

Video: The video for today is about friendship... and diversity: Friends Furever. Be together. Not the same.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is goal-driven! YOUR GOAL: you won't always reach it, but it's something to aim at. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: There will be Glow U: BINGO at 8PM in the Union with some serious prizes! (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

February 3: Setsubun. This is the Shinto holiday called Setsubun, the "Bean-Throwing Day," which is part of the spring festival season. You can read more about this holiday at Wikipedia. The image below shows the holiday bean-throwing at Kobe in Japan:
