HAPPY FRIDAY! You have reached the end of Week 9! Here is a link to the class calendar with the Week 9 and Week 10 assignments. Several other people have finished the class now (congratulations!), and if you can find a little extra time to work ahead and/or do some extra credit, you can finish up the class early too.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I've been so busy this week that there is still a big stack of assignments now on Friday, but I am hoping I can get through the stack by the end of the day. So, if you turned in something before Thursday, I should have comments back to you today. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I've received your email.

New Blogger Templates. Just this week, Blogger released some new Blogger templates. I haven't had time to explore them yet in detail, but they sure look nice! They are designed for mobile-first, so they don't have the regular sidebar anymore. That means if you are viewing someone's blog that is using one of those new templates, you need to look for the ≡ icon at the top of the blog, and that will pop open a menu with access to the labels.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Names. I shared a movie map yesterday, and here's a Map of State Names. Oklahoma is from a Choctaw word, meaning "red people," which breaks down as okla "nation, people" + homma "red." Choctaw scholar Allen Wright, later principal chief of the Choctaw Nation, coined the word.

Language. Yoda has his own brand of English, so no YOLO but OOYL, Only Once You Live.

Spelling. This is one of the most notorious English word pairs: DESERT v. DESSERT.

Featured Storybook. This project is from the Indian Epics class, and it's a sequel to the Myth-Folklore Storybook I shared yesterday: Grimm in India. Just what do the Brothers Grimm have to do with India? Meet John, the husband of Charlotte, sister to the Brothers Grimm... and see what happens when John finds himself in the midst of Indian epic adventures, with Charlotte and her brothers not far behind.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The Path on the Rainbow, an anthology of Native American songs and chants edited by George W. Cronyn. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents.

Words of Wisdom: Today's saying is We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails (a German proverb). Find out more at the Proverb Lab. You have to adjust, both in sailing and in life.

Video: The video for today is a beautiful statement about the many peoples of America: Proud to Be. I wanted to share this video now because those of you in Myth-Folklore have been learning about stories from these traditions this week and next week too.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat knows that learning should be fun: I enjoy the process of learning. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: It's The Stranger Things Experience in the Union tonight at 7PM, and thanks to Todd in Myth-Folklore for his role in organizing this event (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 24: William Morris. Today marks the birthday of William Morris in 1834. He was one of the most gifted designers in the English tradition, as well as being a famous author and activist. You can read all about his life and career in this Wikipedia article, and you will find his beautifully designed edition of Beowulf at the Freebookapalooza:
