Thursday, March 23

Today is Thursday of WEEK 9. There is nothing due today, which makes it the perfect day to get ahead and/or do some extra credit, which is a great strategy if you want to finish before Dead Week or even earlier. Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Update: The Week 9 blog groups are ready to go! :-)

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I'm now working my way through the projects turned in over the weekend, up to 7PM on Sunday. Today I'll finish the rest of the projects turned in on Sunday, and I'll try to start working on the assignments turned in during the week. You can check the project stack to make sure I received your email.

Fall Enrollment. Enrollment has started, and things are set up differently for these online classes next year: I no longer have any ability to do Ozone permissions, but there is a second section of Myth-Folklore. So, if you want to take one of my classes or if you know someone who does, the key is to get enrolled soon and, if the classes are full, to get on the Ozone waiting list right away since I no longer have magic Ozone powers like I used to. Details here: Online Course Enrollment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Stories. Here is the marvelous Tom Gauld again, this time with Mythical Scientific Creatures.

More Stories. Welcome to the United States of Horror Movies. Oklahoma is represented by Terror at Tenkiller. To our north is Near Dark and, naturally, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to our south.

Words from India. You've probably heard the English word "pundit," which is a word from India: PANDIT.

Featured Storybook. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: My Brothers Grimm: The Diary of the Only Grimm Sister. You've never heard of Charlotte Grimm, but without her help, the Brothers Grimm would never have survived to write their famous collection of fairy tales.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Vidyapati's Songs of the Love of Radha and Krishna as translated by Ananda Coomaraswamy. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. Some of you in Indian Epics may be using the second half of the semester to learn more about Krishna:

Words of Wisdom: Today's saying is A serpent, unless it devours a serpent, will not become a dragon (a Latin proverb). Find out more at the Proverb Lab. For those of you who are Latin students: Serpens, ni edat serpentem, draco non fiet.

Video: The video for today is How did English evolve? Find out more at TED-Ed site.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to grow: Start climbing! That is how you develop your abilities. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: There will be a free screening of Al-Hamlet Summit at 6:30PM in Meacham (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 23: Kurosawa. March 23 marks the birthday in the year 1910 of the great Japanese film director, Akira Kurosawa. You can read about his long career and many cinematic achievements in this Wikipedia article. His most famous film is probably The Seven Samurai. Of all of Kurosawa's films, my personal favorite is Dersu Uzala, a story set in Siberia around the year 1900, when Russian mapmakers rely on the skills of a native Nanai tribal member, Dersu Uzala, to survive the harsh Siberian climate. It's a fantastic movie, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1975. Highly recommended!
