Wednesday, March 22

Today is Wednesday of WEEK 9. If you have not written a story for this week yet, that means today is Storytelling Day. I hope you will have fun with that, especially after the Break! Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I've read and replied to the assignment turned in during the week last week, and today I'll start in on the projects turned in last weekend, starting with the Saturday assignments and then moving on to Sunday. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Storytelling Style. For this week's storytelling style suggestions, I wanted to share a Tinder-inspired story that Todd did for Little Red Riding Hood and B. B. Wolf. He used this nifty Tinder-Generator. Perhaps you will want to create a Tinder-inspired story of your own this week!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Writing. Here is some writing advice from Stephen King: Say what you mean. Say what you see. Make a photograph, if you can, for the reader.

Stories. And here's another wonderful graphic from Tom Gauld; see the blog post for a list of all the characters.

Words from Mythology. English "volcano" comes from the name of the Roman god VULCAN, called Hephaestus in Greek.

Featured Storybook. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Tales of Kailasa. In this Storybook, you get to meet the mountain Kailasa and listen to him as he shares his stories with Shiva, the mountain's most famous resident.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Indian Stories from the Pueblos by Frank G. Applegate. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by Pueblo artists:

Words of Wisdom: Today's saying is A child must first creep and then go (an English proverb). Find out more at the Proverb Lab. Babies have a natural growth mindset!

Video: The video for today is from TED: What Makes a Hero?. Find out more at the TED Radio Hour: The Hero's Journey.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat knows the power of yet: What is this? I don't know . . . yet. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Find a hidden water bottle and take it to the South Oval, 12PM-2PM, to see if you've won! (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 22: Caldecott. Today marks the birthday in 1846 of Randolph Caldecott, one of Britain's most famous book illustrators. Here is an illustration from Caldecott's illustrated book inspired by the nursery rhyme, The House that Jack Built, and you can read more about Caldecott's life and career at Wikipedia.
