Saturday, September 2

Today is Saturday of Week 2. I hope you are enjoying the loooooooong weekend!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Finishing Week 2. If you didn't finish up the Week 2 assignments on Friday, you can do that this weekend. And Week 3 is ready to go when you are. :-)

Project Stack. I don't update the stack as often during the weekend, but I'll update it at some point today, so you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. Because Monday is a holiday, that means I'll start reading and replying to those assignments on Tuesday. I work through the stack in chronological order, so the sooner you turn in your Week 2 project assignment, the sooner you will get comments back from me.

Extra Credit: Growth Mindset. I had some time on Friday to start reading people's growth mindset posts at random (you'll see from the blog commenting assignment that I am a fan of random!), and I made a Padlet where I'm sharing some quotes and images from people's posts. I really enjoy those posts, and I hope some of you will want to keep learning more about growth mindset this semester. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments, and for a burst of inspiration, check out the Mindset link in Canvas:

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter, I really like this cartoon that Amanda Patterson shared; she's a great writer to follow at Twitter. You can see more @OnlineMythIndia.

Libraries. As you have probably figured out by now, I am a fan of the library: When in doubt, go to the library.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Odysseus Goes Shopping. In the beginning, there was a list —a shopping list — and adventures worthy of Odysseus await Sam, our intrepid shopper, as he dutifully attempts to acquire all the items on that shopping list in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. These wonderful books by Twain are very much like the Storybook projects people do in this class!

Story of the Day. Today's story is an ecological Aesop's fable: The Two Frogs. It's a story of climate change, frog-style.

Video: The video for today is Saccha Mitr, a tribute to India's farmers and folk musicians by Maati Baani.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is taking some time to think this weekend: Thinking is part of doing. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Come out for GamedayU Broadcast on the Headington Lawn, 8AM-10AM: "students showing the most spirit will be shown on television, as will those with the best signs" (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

September 2: J. R. R. Tolkien. Today, September 2, marks the death in 1973 of the great English author, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, who is best known for creating the marvelous fantasy world of Middle Earth, in which he set his novel The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. You can read about Tolkien's life and career in this Wikipedia article, which is also the source for this drawing that shows Tolkien's own design for the covers of The Lord of the Rings:
