Tuesday, October 17

Today is Tuesday of Week 9, and I've re-arranged the Modules area in Canvas so the new week is on top. The first reading is due today, and I hope you will have fun getting back into story-reading mode this week! Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Comments and Feedback. The Week 9 blog commenting and project feedback assignments are both available now. The blog commenting is different this week: you will be choosing the story you want at each person's blog, based on whatever stories they published in the first half of the semester. Have fun browsing!

Project Stack. Yesterday, I read and replied to all the assignments turned in last week, and I'll start in on the Saturday assignments today. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. As you are reading, look for something you are curious about... and then do a Wikipedia Trail to learn more! Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here is another entry for #GIFITUP2017, this time from Digital Public Library of America.

Words from Mythology. Today's word is CHAOS, from the Greek word khaos, χάος.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: When Brothers Cross Paths. You probably know the Winchester brothers from the TV show Supernatural, and you surely know the Brothers Grimm, so in this Storybook you can see what happens when the four brothers join forces.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The Story of the Great War: Some Lessons from the Mahabharata by Annie Besant. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. Annie Besant was a remarkable woman of her times; you can find out more at this blog post.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. I thought this would be a good follow-up to yesterday's story of the donkey in the tiger-skin.

Video: The video for today is Wanna Live Forever? Become A Noun. And you can read the transcript of the NPR broadcast.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is a non-conformist: Think independently. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: Paulo Moreiro will be giving a talk at noon in 145 Farzaneh Hall on Compulsive Memory: Contemporary Brazilian Cinema and the Military Dictatorship (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

October 17: Dhanteras. Today is the festival of Dhanteras. The festival celebrates Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and also Kubera, the treasure-keeper of the gods. You can read more about the holiday and its legends at Wikipedia. Here is a graphic from Devdutt Pattanaik, plus a related article: Daughter of Demons.
