Sunday, November 12

Today is Sunday of Week 12. That means it is now the last day of Week 12, so you need to finish up any of those end-of-week assignments, along with any Week 12 extra credit you want to do. You can find all the assignments for this week and the rest of the semester at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Thanksgiving break. (repeat announcement) If you have looked ahead to the Week 13 page, you saw that there is a whole week off for Thanksgiving in this class. I'll have more to say about the way Week 13 works in Monday's announcements.

Project Stack. On Monday, I'll start replying to the projects in the order they were turned in. The sooner you turn in your assignment today, the sooner you will get comments back from me! While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Extra Credit. Since it's the last day of Week 12, you might try writing a "famous last words" post for extra credit. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Class Twitter. From yesterday's Twitter @OnlineMythIndia, here are four tanuki pups, also known as raccoon dogs. Some of you may be familiar with the supernatural tanuki of Japanese folklore; you can find out more at Wikipedia.

Creativity. Do you like to color? I do! Here's a free Ramayana coloring book. In this image, King Janaka finds baby Sita while he is ploughing the fields:

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Sky Warrior: A Tournament of Champions. The brave warrior Pyppa does battle with the flying creatures of the gods' arena as each round threatens death in a new form — Medean dragons, the bloodthirsty flying goddesses called Keres, and more. How will she survive this life-and-death ordeal?

Free Book Online: Today's free videobook is another one by Devdutt Pattanaik: Seven Secrets of the Goddess. See the Indian Epics Reading Guides for links and the more information.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: Lady Luck and the Boy. "Fortuna's Wheel" goes up and down, making luck that is good and bad, but Fortuna, a.k.a. Lady Luck, does not like it when we blame her for our own foolish mistakes.

Video: The video for today is from PBS Studios: Why Is Stop Motion Animation Powerful? You can learn more about the history of stop motion video at Wikipedia.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is learning and having fun: This is hard. This is fun! You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: The Oklahoma Festival Ballet will be performing Swan Lake today at 3PM in the Elsie C. Brackett Theatre (Rupel J. Jones Theater) (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

November 12: Bahaullah. Today, November 12, marks the birthday in the year 1817 of the great religious leader named Bahaullah ("Glory of God") who founded the Bahai faith. The Bahai faith is a monotheistic religion in the tradition of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and it has gained followers around the world. Estimates place the number of Bahai faithful at around six million, and there is a Bahai community in Norman. You can find out more at Wikipedia; the image below shows the Shrine of Bahaullah near Acre, Israel:
