Tuesday, March 27

Today is Tuesday of Week 10, and I've re-arranged the Modules area in Canvas so the new week is on top. If you have not started this week's reading, today is the day to do that. Here is a link to the Week 10 assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Read like a writer. Remember this advice from the start of the semester? Now that you have completed six weeks of reading and storytelling, you are probably getting a better sense of just what it means to read like a writer, looking for things you can use in every story that you read for class... including what you might find in the stories from other people's blogs and projects.

Project Stack. If you turned in something by last Tuesday at noon, you should have gotten comments back from me already, and today I'll keep working on the projects turned in during break. While you are waiting on comments back from me, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I always enjoy looking at Wikipedia Trails posts, and here is how Shivani got from Krishna to Kshatriya. Doing a Wikipedia Trail can sometimes lead you to totally new things and/or it can show you how the different things you have been learning about are all connected.

Myth Item. For the Native American reading in Myth-Folklore, I thought you might enjoy this NPR story and map: Map Of Native American Tribes.

Myth Book Online: Today's free book is Totkv Mocvse / New Fire: Creek Folktales. by Earnest Gouge. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. There are audio recordings of the stories in Creek!

India Video: For those of you who are fans of Devdutt Pattanaik, here is Krishna's Secret, from his Seven Secrets of Vishnu series.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb is from an Aesop's fable: Better bend than break. The oak tree stands firm in the wind and breaks, while the reed bends in the wind and survives. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: Here's some advice from Stephen King:

Reading: Here's an item to inspire your reading this week: A Book is a Dream.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is ready to work hard: Real learning takes work. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: Here's a quick video for building your confidence: Tips to Boost Your Confidence.

Event on Campus: The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies is hosting a symposium today starting at 1PM in Gould Hall Gallery 130: “Visual Culture and the Early Book” (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

March 27: M.C. Escher. Today marks the anniversary of the death in 1972 of the amazing artist M. C. Escher; he was born in 1898. You can read more about Escher's life and work in this Wikipedia article. I am sure you are familiar with many of his drawings and paintings; I have included one of my favorites below - Drawing Hands - along with a Vimeo video inspired by Escher's genius way of seeing the world. Enjoy!
