Sunday, April 22

Today is Sunday of Week 13. It's the last day of Week 13, and it's also the next-to-last weekend of the semester for this class too. If you do most of your classwork on the weekends, take advantage of today to do some extra credit or start Week 14 if you can. You'll find all the assignments for this week and next week at the Class Calendar.

Also, a big THANK YOU to everybody who has done the Week 13 Project Feedback assignment already which has a brainstorming survey. People have done such a good job with that, coming up with even more ideas I can work with this summer to try to improve the classes for next year. I really appreciate your help -- and, for those of you who will be doing that assignment today, thank you in advance for your feedback and ideas!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Respect your time boundaries. That is just one of the recommendations in this article, which is from one of my favorite blogs for teachers. Even though this is advice to teachers for saving time, these tips definitely apply to students too: 5 Powerful Ways to Save Time.

Week 14 and Week 15. Keep an eye on the class calendar so that you will be able to finish up all your assignments by Friday of Dead Week (Week 15). So, Monday is the start of Week 14, then comes Week 15 a.k.a. Dead Week, and the final assignments will be due on Friday of Dead Week, May 4, at noon.

Project Stack. I'll be updating the stack periodically throughout the day today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. This was cool: two different people did Wikipedia Trails starting from Durga, but ending up in different places of course! Here's Nate, From Durga to Vedas, and here's Chris, From Durga to Toranas.

Myth Item. Some of you in Myth-Folklore will be reading Dante next week, so I wanted to share this fun item: Dante's Inferno: Academic Edition.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb also comes from Dante: All hope abandon, ye who enter here. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Event on Campus: It's the Norman Earth Day Festival: come celebrate in Reaves Park from noon to 5PM today (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 22: Earth Day. Today is Earth Day! You can read about this holiday in Wikipedia. In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to reflect on how much paper we have saved in this class. Based on the amount of writing and number of students, I would estimate that we have saved about 9000 pages, or 18 reams of paper, this semester. So, by working online like this, we have saved a tree!

And on the subject of saving trees, I wanted to share this video from Maati Baani as part of their campaign to save the trees of Aarey Forest in Mumbai... I shared this earlier for Arbor Day, and Earth Day is a good excuse to share it again:

And here's an Amar Chitra Katha graphic about the historic Chipko Re Movement.
