Tuesday, April 24

Today is Tuesday of Week 14, and I've re-arranged the Modules area in Canvas so the new week is on top. The first reading is due today, and the blog commenting assignment is ready to go, and so are the Week 14 and Week 15 Project Feedback assignments (for those of you who want to work ahead). Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

My schedule today. I'll be out of the office in the morning, but I should be back in the afternoon, so if you send me an email in the morning, I'll be able to get back to you by the end of the day.

Project Stack. If you turned in something before noon on Saturday, you should have comments back from me, and I'll finish the Saturday assignments today if all goes well and start on Sunday. While you are waiting on comments back from me, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Blog Stream. Here's something fun from Akriti about her Indian dancing groups: Getting Through the Rest of the Semester... dancing would be a good way to do that!

ICYMI: In Case You Missed It. For the rest of the semester, I'll be posting here some of my favorite items from announcements earlier in the semester. The items below come from Week 1 and Week 2... but the campus event below and the "on this day" item are new!

Story from India. This is a story from India about the origin of the coconut; it involves the great sage Vishvamitra, whom you now know as Rama's guru: Coconut Lore.

Word from Mythology. Find out how the Greek god Atlas became a word in English meaning a book of maps: ATLAS.

India Video: Now that those of you in Indian Epics are Ramayana experts, you can learn about the epic throughout South Asia: Ramayana: The Timeless Tale. (Professor Goldman, who you will see in this video, was one of my teachers at Berkeley!)

Language: Here's a beautiful depiction of related languages in the form of a family tree. Find out more at the Minna Sundberg's Language Tree.

Mythology. This diagram shows different kinds of hybrid mythical animals based on how the creatures overlap: Mythical Creatures (full-sized view).

Video: In honor of the Library of Congress (see below), here's Unread Book (Uptown Funk).

India. Here's a beautiful free coloing book online: The Picturebook Ramayana. This page shows King Janaka discovering baby Sita when plowing a field:

Writing: Here's an item from one of my all-time favorite cartoonists, Tom Gauld: Characters for an Epic Tale.

India Video. Listen and watch as Maati Baani celebrate the farmers of India; find out more here:

Event on Campus: It's Stick it to Stigma Week, and today's event is a petting zoo and cookies on the South Oval, 11AM-1PM (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

April 24. This is the birthday of the Library of Congress! The Library was created in the year 1800 when President John Adams signed a law to appropriate $5,000 to purchase "such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress." Find out more at Wikipedia. This shows the Reading Room:
