Tuesday, September 11

Today is Tuesday of Week 4. Here is a link to the Week 4 assignments. Today is a reading day for those of you who have not started the Week 4 reading yet. Maybe you will give my reading tip below a try!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Talk to yourself while reading. Anything you do to mix your other senses into the reading experience will make a more lasting impression. Reading out loud is one way to do that, and another way to do that is to talk to yourself while you read. You can even have imaginary conversations with the characters. Try it! It's weird, yes, but it means you really engage with the story.

Project Stack. If you turned in an assignment on Friday or before 6PM on Saturday, you should have comments back from me. I'll finish the Saturday assignments today! Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

Hurricane. If you've read my Introduction post, you know I'm living in North Carolina, and the hurricane is heading my way. We have a generator, and I can get online with my phone if the Internet goes out... but be warned: I might be unexpectedly offline later this week. I'll keep these announcements updated as we learn more (my husband is a meteorologist, so I'm getting custom forecasts).

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. These Wikipedia Trails are so much fun; here's one from Jaycie that goes From Oz to Counterculture by way of Rhino Records.

Featured Storybook. Those of you in Indian Epics have seen that the epic is all about brothers, so check out this Storybook: Adventures of the Brothers Fite. Beckett, Owen, Lucas, and Jack: are they heroes on an epic adventure? or brothers playing together in the back yard? The answer is... complicated.

India Video. The holiday of Diwali will be coming up in November, and it is connected to the Ramayana: The Story of Diwali.

Myth Video. And here's a TED-Ed video about a famous Greek myth: Orpheus and Eurydice.

Myth Item. Here's a word from Greek mythology: TITANIC, from the huge Greek gods called Titans.

Writing. There are lot of sneaky English word-pairs, and here's a common one: DESERT v. DESSERT.

If you want to stretch while you are reading today, here are some fanciful poses: Yoga for Book Lovers (tangled plot!):

Growth Mindset Cats. Cats are all about stretching: Learners stretch their skills every day.

Even better than stretching: dance! Live to Inspire.

Event on Campus. Hang-Out/Hammock and Brazilian chocolates are both on the agenda for today as part of Brazil Week, and you can come see Rio in Bizzell at 8PM (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

September 11. In honor of the first responders from 9/11, here is a StoryCorps video: John and Joe. You can find out more here: Firefighter Father Recalls Losing Sons On 9/11.
