Sunday, April 7

Today is Sunday of Week 11, and I hope everybody is having a good weekend! If you have not finished the Week 11 assignments yet, today is the day to do that, so ere is a link to Week 11. And if you are ready to start on Week 12, all those assignments are available now too.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Last-minute assignments. I know the end of the semester gets really hectic, so I just wanted to explain about last-minute assignments. There's always a grace period, but if the grace period is not enough, then turn in the assignment for the following week. For example, you should turn in your Week 11 Project today, Sunday. If something comes up unexpectedly, there's a grace period Monday morning. If that's not enough, turn it in for Week 12 instead of Week 11. All points go into the same total, and it's not a big deal to miss an assignment. Just make sure your assignment is done when you turn it in (that's what the checklist is for); if you run out of time, there's always next week!

Project Stack. I'll try to update the stack periodically today, so you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. One of the fun things about memes is that you can customize them for your story or your project, like what Jack did here for his Storybook about the Jaya-Vijaya reincarnation: Hey Jaya.

Comic Book On Reserve. Today's comic book is Tales of Shiva: The Mighty Lord of Kailasa.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is in honor of the Medieval Fair (see below): King Arthur: Tales of the Round Table by Andrew Lang.

Featured Storybook. This lovely Storybook is made with Wix for the website: Project Runway: Indian Epics Edition. You will see both beautiful clothes and beautiful stories here about Ulupi the Asura Princess, Noor Jahan the Mughal Queen, and Ganges the River Goddess. Which fashion designer do you think won this season's contest?

India Video. Here's another Epified video: Moksha - Freedom from Life and Death.

Myth Video. Here's a fun one from Vox: Why knights fought snails in medieval art.

Myth Item. Here's an unusual word from mythology: SYRINGE. It comes from Greek syrinx, which refers to a tube or pipe, including a musical pipe, and that Greek word goes with a story about a nymph named Syrinx (Σύριγξ).

Writing. Choosing names is often an important part of telling a story, and here are some charts that show name popularity over time.

And if you're feeling overwhelmed with homework, maybe your dog can help.

Growth Mindset Cats. Or you could ask a friend for help: I am inspired by my friends.

Plus some advice from learning expert Barbara Oakley: Turn Information into Intelligence.

Event near Campus. It's the last day of the Medieval Fair today! You can find out more at the Medieval Fair website.

April 7: Ravi Shankar. Today is the birthday of the amazing Indian musician, Ravi Shankar, one of the modern masters of the sitar. He was born in 1920, and he died in 2012. You can read about Ravi Shankar's life and career at his official website and in this Wikipedia article, which is the source for this photo of Ravi Shankar with George Harrison of the Beatles, back in 1967. You can also find some great Ravi Shankar videos at YouTube.com - such as this wonderful video of Shankar's appearance on the Dick Cavett show. He left us with much beautiful music!
