Sunday, September 29

Today is Sunday of Week 6. So, if you have not finished up the Week 6 assignments, today is the day to do that! You can also get started on Week 7 now too.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Extra credit. There are all kinds of extra credit options, and I hope they can be fun and/or useful. If you haven't given any of those a try, maybe you can do that today and maybe even make one of the extra credit options part of your regular weekly routine.

Project Stack. The sooner you turn in your project today, the sooner you'll get comments back from me next week (I reply to the assignments in the order that they are turned in). I'll update the stack periodically today so you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. This is actually from a project: Marissa is doing a Storybook with Hawaiian stories, and she embedded a Google Map right there in her Introduction page. You can zoom in and in and in until you actually see the shoreline of the islands: Hawaiian Mythology.

Twitter Stream. Yesterday was International Rabbit Day and Smithsonian Librarians shared this lovely book; you can read the book online here: Gazapito y Gazapete.

Story of the Day. There are lots of different stories about how the tortoise got its shell; this story comes from Ghana in West Africa: How the Tortoise Got Its Shell. In this story, the tortoise used to a person, but things... happened.

Indian Epics Today. The character for today is Satyavati, wife of King Shantanu, and thus grandmother to Pandu and Dhritarashtra, and thus great-grandmother of both the Pandavas and Kauravas. More about Satyavati, and here's an Epified video:

Storybooks. And here's a wonderful Storybook about the trees of India: When Trees Talk.

Myth-Folklore Video. This is a Crash Course video about Mythical Trees.

Proverbs. Here's a proverb from China about trees: One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.

Writing. Here's some Trek inspiration if you are doing some writing for your project today: Boldly write what no one has written before.

Mindset Cats. The mindset cat agrees: I will write without fear.

HEART Video. This short film by Louis Schwartzberg features the words of Brother David Steindl-Rast: Gratitude.

Event on Campus. This is about an ongoing event in Bizzell Library: James Burnes, from History of Science, has set up a Scooby Doo display, and a Mad magazine display also... with a visitor survey on the whiteboard. It's around he stairwell across from the circulation desk in Bizzell (find out more).

September 29: Navratri. Today is the beginning of the Hindu festival called Navratri, a night-day festival, and the first day of the festival honors the goddess as Shailaputri. You can find out more about the goddess here:

And here's an Epified video: Nine Goddesses - Vasant Navratri.
