Tuesday, October 8

Today is Tuesday of Week 8. Here is a link to the Week 8 assignments, and I hope you enjoy the review assignments. I'd recommend doing all three of the review posts together, and then you can move on and finish up the rest of the Week 8 assignments now, before OU-Texas weekend.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. If you turned in an assignment before 3PM on Friday, you should have comments back from me; I'll finish the Friday assignments and then start in on the Saturday assignments today. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

Plan your week. For those of you who will be away for OU-Texas weekend, make sure you plan out your week so that you can get the work for this class done before Friday. Many of you have a free pass for the project this week, so that will make it easier to finish up. For those of you who are turning in a Week 8 project assignment, I will get comments back to you today, or tomorrow at the latest, and that way you will have what you need to get that Week 8 project done before Friday.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Gracie made a wonderful Cheezburger graphic for this time of the semester; here's her post:

Twitter Stream. I know there are lots of STEM majors in this class, so I thought you might like Tom Gauld's new cartoon about STET, STEP, and STEW majors:

Indian Epics Today. Ravana is the antagonist of the Ramayana (see Dussehra news below), and Duryodhana is the antagonist of the Mahabharata. More about Duryodhana, and here's a video that I just learned about from a Mahabharata graphic novel and animation project called 18 Days:

Story of the Day. Here's a fun "why" story about Brer Rabbit and Brer Dog and, yes, it involves Brer Dog's nice new shoes: Why Brer Dog Runs Brer Rabbit.

Storybooks. And here's a Storybook about cats: Nine Lives of a Cat: Falling Through the Generations.

Myth-Folklore Video. Here's a Mike Rugnetta video from his days at PBS Studios: Is Doctor Who a Religion?

Proverbs. This is another proverb from Kashmir: Be encouraged, O pilgrim, though your destination is far off.

H.E.A.R.T.. Plus some more upbeat advice from Molly Hahn of Buddha Doodles.

Mindset Cats. Today's mindset cat recommends curiosity:

Writing Video. If you are curious about words, here is a fun song about people who became nouns: Wanna Live Forever? Become A Noun.

Event on Campus. Learn how to make your own 3D puzzle cubes using Autodesk Inventor! The workshop is from 6:30PM - 7:30PM in Bizzell Memorial Library, Innovation @ the EDGE (details).

October 19: Dussehra. The Hindu holiday of Dussehra celebrates the victory of Rama over Ravana, the light over the dark — a story that is now very familiar to everybody in the Indian Epics class, and to some of you in Myth-Folklore also! You can read more about the festivities at Wikipedia. The ten-headed demon Ravana is often burned in effigy as part of the Dussehra celebration; check out the Twitter stream for photos from this year's festivities.

Here's a Dussehra card from Twitter:
