Friday, January 24

HAPPY FRIDAY! Today is Friday of Week 2. Here is a link to the Week 2 assignments; you can decide if you want to finish the end-of-week items today or over the weekend. Either way works! And if you have time, do some extra credit; now is a good time to get ahead so that you can then miss some assignments later when midterms get going in your other classes, etc.

Update: I've added in all the new stories from Week 2 to the story randomizer. If you are curious to start reading other people's stories, that's the commenting assignment for Week 3, and it's ready to go now. So, when you do your Week 2 comments (introductions), you might want to carry on and do the Week 3 comments also (introductions plus stories!).

Class Procedures and Reminders

And now... CONGRATULATIONS! I hope you all had a good time with the reading and storytelling this week. In Week 1, you became bloggers, and now in Week 2, you are storytellers. Thank you for being willing to try these new things; I really appreciate all the work you are doing so that we have this blog network full of stories now.

Announcements. At the end of the week it's a good idea to review the week's announcements to see if you missed anything important. There's even an extra credit option for doing that: Review and Back Up.

Project Stack. As people turn in their project assignments, I'll add them to the stack. Then, while you are waiting on feedback from me, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment. I'll be including a link to the stack every day in the announcements from now on.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. It's always fun seeing people's pets in their Introduction posts, and thanks to that I recognized Hannah's adorable dog in the dog made famous now in her first story: Why the Dog Plays Fetch. So cute!

Twitter Stream. This meme is pretty hilarious, and here it has been turned into Tibetan thangka art at Twitter. More about the women-yelling-at-cat meme.

Make your own at Imgflip; you can add text to the top. :-)

100-Word Stories. Today's story is: The Fox and the Cat (click title for more info).

Indian Epics Today. The character for today is BHUMI, the earth goddess. You can find out more about Bhumi here; this image shows Bhumi embracing her daughter Sita, the heroine of the Ramayana, while Sita's husband, King Rama, looks on:

Storybooks. And here's an Indian Epics Storybook all about the power of women: Swa-Shakti: The Year of Women's Empowerment. Check out the storytelling style: all the characters are women. All of them!

Indian Music Video. Here's a Maati Baani video that might remind some of you in Myth-Folklore class about the Pygmalion story you read this week: Naina Bawre.

Proverbs. Here's a fun Latin proverb: The frog jumps back into the swamp even if you've placed him on a throne. (Latin here)

H.E.A.R.T.. This is some advice from Anne Lamott about unplugging at the end of the week:

Mindset Cats. The growth mindset cat agrees: Take a study break. You earned it.

HEART Video. And here's a fun reflection on a moment of time from OK Go: The One Moment.

Event on Campus. O. Gail Poole’s Sideshow opens today at Fred Jones Museum! (details)

January 24: E.T.A. Hoffmann. Today marks the birthday in the year 1776 of the genius fantasy author E.T.A. Hoffmann; you can read all about his life and career at Wikipedia. Among his many famous stories is The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet. Here is a dance from the ballet as shown in the Disney film Fantasia:
