Monday, March 23

If you did not read these special announcements yet,
please do that first:
Info about Flex Week, Memorial Week, mega-grace period, and P/NP.

Today is Monday of Week 10. Some of you will be working on Week 10 assignments and some of you will be working on Week 9 assignments which are still available! The grace period for the Week 9 storytelling, project, and other end-of-week assignments lasts all this week to give you a chance to catch up on that as needed (mega-grace period).

Also, I know things are completely upended for some of you right now so remember: you have that Flex week off that you can take in this class right now if you need to. Please do not let this class add to your stress. I'll be posting announcements and going along as usual for people who are ready for class to start up again, but I know that there is nothing usual about this situation. I hope you will contact me with any questions or concerns you have, and I will help if I can.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Week 10 Reading. Some of you are going to move on to the Week 10 Reading, and I hope you will enjoy it; there is really cool stuff to read in both classes! In Indian Epics you will be choosing between Krishna and Jatakas (details) and in Myth-Folklore, it's Native American traditions (details).

Project Stack. I've got some projects in the stack to read (THANK YOU for stories to read; that is something I am very glad to be doing these days!), and as always you can check the stack to make sure I received your project.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I hope you all will feel free to use your blogs for grieving, brainstorming, venting, whatever you need to do as you get through this very hard time. Aspen's Famous Last Words post title pretty much sums it up for me too:

Twitter Stream. A lot of you are going to be meeting your professors' pets if you are doing Zoom sessions this week, and lots of people have been sharing pictures like that at Twitter. I really like Bunsen, the chemistry dog! (Also, just a reminder: please be kind to your newly online professors this week! And if there is a problem you are having, let them know; going online like this is a pretty overwhelming experience for everybody...).

Plus some useful COVID information; the Oklahoma Dept. of Health account has been a good one to follow! They shared this helpful graphic:

Storybooks. From some years ago in Myth-Folklore, an owl Storybook: An Owl's Tale.

Myth-Folklore Video. And here's a Native American story about an owl: The Owl and the Raven: An Inuit Legend.

Indian Epics Today. Some of you in Indian Epics will be reading about Krishna this week, so Krishna is the epic character of today. You can read more about Krishna here, and here's an Epified video:

Words. Here's a word from India that may surprise you: the word cheetah comes to English from the Hindi word chita (details).

Writing. And here's some proofreading humor: Before you hit Sned.

Mindset Cats. The mindset cat does not fear mistakes; she knows you have to learn, and move on.

Mindset Video. And this video has lots of advice about feedforward and learning from mistakes:

March 23: Kurosawa. March 23 marks the birthday in the year 1910 of the great Japanese film director, Akira Kurosawa. You can read about his long career and many cinematic achievements in this Wikipedia article. His most famous film is probably The Seven Samurai; see below. Of all of Kurosawa's films, my personal favorite is Dersu Uzala, a story set in Siberia around the year 1900, when Russian mapmakers rely on the skills of a native Nanai tribal member, Dersu Uzala, to survive the harsh Siberian climate. It's a fantastic movie, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1975. Highly recommended!

I checked to see if Dersu was available for streaming, and it was not, although you can find Kurosawa's masterpiece The Seven Samurai streaming at Amazon Prime video ($3.99 rental): this is definitely one of the great movies of all time!
