Sunday, February 25

Today is Sunday of Week 6. You need to finish the end-of-week assignments today, and you might also want to do some extra credit too. The more extra credit you do early in the semester, the easier the end of the semester will be in this class! You can find all the assignments for this week and next week at the Class Calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Put hours for this class in your planner. Just as you schedule time to physically go to your classroom classes, this class will be much easier to manage if you actually plan to physically "go" to class, scheduling those hours in your planner. Especially if you find yourself missing assignments and/or using the grace period, it might help to put the actual six hours for this class into your calendar, and Sunday is a good day to do that for the coming week.

Project Stack. I'll be updating the stack periodically today so that you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. And the sooner you turn that in today, the sooner you will get comments back. If you wait until the evening, that means it will be later in the week when I reach your assignment in the stack.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I learned something new from Tyler's great Wikipedia Trail that started with the at sign: From @ to Surimi. In Japan, the @ sign has the nickname narutomaki, and you can see why:

India Item. Ganesha is one of the most popular gods of India, so I thought you might enjoy learning about this popular Indian TV show: Vighnaharta Ganesh (Ganesha, Remover of Obstacles). You can watch the show on YouTube!

Myth Video=: And here's another Crash Course Myth video: Fire and Buffalo Goddesses. The whole Crash Course series is an extra credit reading/watching option in Myth-Folklore, and there are extra credit video options in Indian Epics also.

India Comic Book: Today's comic book is Ghatotkacha: The Chivalrous Demon (Ghatotkacha is the rakshasa son of the Pandava hero Bhima and his rakshasi wife Hidimbi). See the Amar Chitra Katha blog for the Bizzell Reserve call number and more information.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb is literally true for plants, and it is metaphorically true for many other things too: All the buds upon a bush do not blossom. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: Think about the power you are capable of wielding with your weapons of mass creation.

H.E.A.R.T.: I really like this quote about being brave, but I have to add that it is NOT from Milne's Winnie the Pooh books; instead, the words come from a Disney film. Find out more about that: A.A. Milne Would Never Write That! It is just one of the many (MANY) misattributed quotes that you will find online.

Growth Mindset: And speaking of being brave, today's growth mindset cat has some advice: Confront your fears. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: Sunday is a good day on which to practice gratitude: Gratitude, with David Steindl-Rast.

Event on Campus: Come to the Jacobson House at 5PM today for Meet the Artists: “Contemporary Exchanges: Idaho Native Artists” featuring Derek No-Sun Brown, Kira Murillo, and Louise Dixley (details). Here is a painting by No-Sun called Golden Dawn; find out more at the War Medicine Art gallery.

February 25: George Harrison. Today marks the birthday of George Harrison in 1943; he died in 2001. You can read about his life and career in this Wikipedia article.Today is my birthday too, and when I was growing up I always felt special because I shared my birthday with one of the Beatles. Then, when I started learning about India, I felt an even closer connection with George Harrison. Here is a recording of George Harrison performing Om Hare Om: Gopala Krishna:

Here is an interview with Ravi Shankar and George Harrison about one of their collaborative projects: Chants of India. I think it is a fabulous album!

My favorite piece on the album is their version of the famous Mangalam mantra:
