Tuesday, February 27

Today is Tuesday of Week 7, and I've re-arranged the Modules area in Canvas so the new week is on top. The first reading is due today, and the comment and feedback assignments for the week are both ready to go too. Here is a link to the Week 7 assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Success Tip: Explore new notetaking strategies. I hope you will try one new notetaking strategy each week; there are all kinds of ways to focus your attention as you read while also being open to curiosity too, and if you can find the strategies that help you do that, you will get more out of the reading. That's true not just in this class, but for the reading you do in any class! There's a big list of notetaking strategies here.

Project Stack. I managed to reply to all the emails from Thursday and Friday, and today I will finish up the Saturday emails and hopefully start in on Sunday. While you are waiting on comments back from me, you can check the stack to make sure I received your project checklist email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. There's a Tech Tip for making a cheezburger meme, and I thought this one that Tori made was so cute: Didn't get to the coffee fast enough.

India Item. The Talking Myths project from India is a wonderful resource, and here is a Mahabharata-related folktale you will find there about Bhishma's karma: A Lizard and the Prince of Hastinapura.

Myth Video: One of the great features of the African folk tradition is the drumming, especially the remarkable talking drums. Find out more at Wikipedia.

India Comic Book: Today's comic book is Tales of Yudhishthira: Justice for the Pandava; the cover shows the story of the riddle at the lake of death. See the Amar Chitra Katha blog for the Bizzell Reserve call number and more information.

Proverb of the Day: Today's proverb comes from Zanzibar: A coconut shell full of water is a sea to an ant. Find out more at the Proverb Laboratory.

Writing: Here's one of those weird word mix-ups that the spellchecker cannot catch: Heroin v. Heroine.

Reading: Here's an item to inspire your reading this week: Reading is Fun.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is learning from mistakes: Errors are portals of discovery. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Video: And here's a lovely video animation of Brene Brown speaking about Empathy.

Event on Campus: There will be a showing of Embrace: The Documentary at 7PM in Meacham, followed by a panel discussion at 9PM (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

February 27: Leonard Nimoy. Today marks the anniversary of the death of Leonard Nimoy just three years ago in 2015 (he was born in 1931). Nimoy is most famous for having played Spock in the Star Trek original series. You can read more about his life and career at Wikipedia, and I highly recommend this documentary, made by his son, which you can watch streaming at Netflix: For the Love of Spock.

And yes, Spock was a Vulcan... so I made this Spock Cat meme: Be a Vulcan! Not a Vulcan't.
