October 1: Tim O'Brien. Today is the birthday of the author Tim O'Brien, who wrote The Things They Carried and other novels about the Vietnam War; he was born in 1946. He is one of the main speakers in Ken Burns's documentary Vietnam, which is now streaming on Netflix. Highly recommended! Below is a video with an excerpt from the documentary, with Tim O'Brien reading from his novel.
