Wednesday, February 27

Today is Wednesday of Week 7. Here is a link to this week's assignments. I hope you are finding some good story material you can use from the reading this week for writing your own story.

Special Request: A student from this class last semester, Muneeb Ata, is doing a survey and would like your input. He is looking at post-undergraduate labor mobility and job opportunities in Oklahoma. Here is the link: SURVEY.
From Muneeb: Students who take this survey will not only be helping in creating more niche job/internship growth in Oklahoma, but will also enter a drawing to win $50, and it takes less than 5 minutes to complete.
Class Procedures and Reminders

Week 2-3-4 Stories. With the randomizer, I try to make sure every story gets at least two comments, but it's easy for me to miss something. Any stories you wrote back in Week 2, 3, or 4 should have gotten those two comments by now, but if you have a story from one of those weeks in your blog that didn't get two comments, let me know, and I'll put it back in the randomizer.

Project Stack. If you turned something in before 5PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me now, and I'll keep working on the Sunday assignments today. You can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Here's a lovely Automotivator poster that Daana made; tears are powerful in life and in stories too: Don't Be Afraid to Cry.

Free Book Online. Today's free book is Buddhist Parables by Eugene Watson Burlingame.

Free Audiobook. Today's free audiobook is In Ghostly Japan by Lafcadio Hearn.

Featured Storybook. Here's an Indian Epics storybook in outer space: Onboard the Spaceship Pushpaka. The spaceship Pushpaka is visiting a solar system where each planet has its own special connection to one of Vishnu's avatars back in the ancient days of planet Earth.

India Video. There are lots of great videos about making rangoli designs, like this: Simple Rangoli Design with 5X1 Dots. (More about the swastika/su-astika design tradition in India.)

Myth Video. Some of you are reading Anansi stories this week in Myth-Folklore, so here's a video from the National Museum of Jamaica: Anancy and the Snake.

Myth Item. I really like this proverb from South AfricaDawn does not come twice to wake us.

Writing. Speaking of science fiction, here's a great cartoon from Tom Gauld.

And planet Earth is a pretty big place; here's a cool infographic about that: The World as 100 People.

Growth Mindset Cats. Growth is about exploring that big world: go where there is no path.

Matt Harding has been dancing around the world for years; here's one of his videos from back in 2006: Where in the world is Matt?

Event on Campus. There will be a STEM Inclusion Council event this evening at 6PM in the Bizzell Community Room... with refreshments (details).

Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

February 27: Leonard Nimoy. Today marks the anniversary of the death of Leonard Nimoy just four years ago in 2015 (he was born in 1931). Nimoy is most famous for having played Spock in the Star Trek original series. You can read more about his life and career at Wikipedia, and I highly recommend this documentary, made by his son, which you can watch streaming at Netflix: For the Love of Spock.

And yes, Spock was a Vulcan... so I made this Spock Cat meme: Be a Vulcan! Not a Vulcan't.
