Monday, October 21

Today is Monday of Week 10. Here is a link to the Week 10 assignments, and if you're finishing up some work during the grace period this morning, here is Week 9.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Reading. This week in Indian Epics you will be choosing between Krishna and Jatakas (details) and in Myth-Folklore, it's Native American traditions (details). I hope you will enjoy the new reading this week!

Project Stack. Today I'll reply to the projects turned in on Thursday and Friday, and hopefully I'll get through all the Saturday items also. Meanwhile, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. There were a lot of great illustrations that people found for their Week 9 stories, and I really liked this one that Shivani used for her story from a children's book online; it's Anansi and the pot of wisdom:

Twitter Stream. I thought this was so cool: an ancient Roman ring with the goddess Ceres on it (details).

Story of the Day. This is an African American folktale about the owl, and his troubled home life: Why Mr. Owl Can't Sing.

Storybooks. And from some years ago in Myth-Folklore, an owl Storybook: An Owl's Tale.

Myth-Folklore Video. And here's a Native American story about an owl: The Owl and the Raven: An Inuit Legend.

Indian Epics Today. Some of you in Indian Epics will be reading about Krishna this week, so Krishna is the epic character of today. You can read more about Krishna here, and this is a video preview for a graphic novel that we have in Bizzell: Krishna: Defender of Dharma.

Words. Here's a word from India that may surprise you: the word cheetah comes to English from the Hindi word chita (details).

Writing. And here's some proofreading humor: Before you hit Sned.

Mindset Cats. The mindset cat does not fear mistakes; she knows you have to learn, and move on.

Mindset Video. And this video has lots of advice about feedforward and learning from mistakes:

Event on Campus. It's the Piano Rendezvous at 7:30PM tonight in Sharp Concert Hall (details).

October 21: Ursula Le Guin. Today would have been Ursula Le Guin's 90th birthday; she died last year, aged 88. Le Guin is one of my all-time favorite writers, and you can read more about her at Wikipedia. She wrote so many good books, but I think my favorite will always be The Lathe of Heaven.
