Thursday, October 24

Today is Thursday of Week 10. Here is a link to Week 10 ... and a link to Week 11 for those of you who are working ahead (and working ahead is always good!).

Class Procedures and Reminders

Story OR Story Lab. This is one of those weeks where you have a choice between doing a Storytelling blog post or, instead, a Story Lab post. For those of you doing a Storybook project, the Story Lab is a great opportunity to do research to help you with your next Storybook story (you'll see that on the list of Story Lab options).

Project Stack. If you turned in your project assignment before 10PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me now. I should be able to finish the Sunday assignments today, and then I'll start replying to the items turned in on Monday. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Kaitlyn did a Tech Tip to learn about embedding a YouTube video in a blog post!

Twitter Stream. From the ACK Twitter stream, here's a really cool item inspired by an episode in Valmiki's Ramayana:

Story of the Day. This is an African American story about pigs that might remind you of the Three Little Pigs... but this wolf is way more eerie: How Come Pigs Can See the Wind.

Indian Epics Today. The character is Kaliya, a deadly water snake that the young Krishna fought and defeated. More about Kaliya here.

Storybooks. Here's a Storybook from the Myth-Folklore class last year: Babylonian Tales: Book of Nabu.

Indian Music Video. It's been a while since I shared an Indian music video, so here's a lovely one from Maati Baani: Rang Rangiya. Turn on the "CC" (closed captions) while watching the video to see the subtitles.

Words. Here's a word from India that might surprise you: the word shampoo comes to English from the Hindi word champo. Find out more here.

Writing. You can see a full-sized view of the infographic here: How Does the Act of Writing Affect Your Brain?

Mindset Cats. The mindset cat knows that when you learn new things, your brain makes new connections.

Mindset Video. This is a quick video about Carol Dweck's brain research at Stanford.

Event on Campus. There will be a panel on "Rematriation: Indigenous Knowledge and the Disruption of the Colonial Project" at 6PM tonight in the Zarrow Hall Community Room (details).

Friday, October 24: United Nations Day. Each year, October 24 is "United Nations Day," commemorating the signing of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945. You can read more about the United Nations in this Wikipedia article, and at the United Nations website, un.org. The image below shows the flags of many countries flying outside U.N. headquarters in New York City:

And check out the United Nations' YouTube channel! For example, here's Greta Thunberg at the U.N. Climate Action Summit:
