Wednesday, October 23

Today is Wednesday of Week 10. Here is a link to this week's assignments plus a link to Week 11 for those of you working ahead.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Extra credit. Remember that you can do extra credit at any time during the week; you don't need to wait until the end of the week! So if you need to do some extra credit to make up for missed work in the past and/or if you want to do some extra credit to work ahead and finish early, you can do that anytime. Especially if you know things will be getting busy in your other classes later, do some extra credit in this class now. It will give you room to maneuver later!

Project stack. If you turned in something before 6PM on Sunday, you should have comments back from me, and I'll keep working on the Sunday assignments today. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Week 10 is a Story Lab week and Abbi used that option to explore Star Wars tropes at the TVTropes website, along with thinking about Star Wars posters: very cool! (And for another Star Wars poster, see the Josh Kirby item below.)

Twitter Stream. For those of you in Myth-Folklore working on Native American stories this week, check out this animated gif from Ranjani Chakraborty at Vox.com.

Myth-Folklore. You can find out more about this map of Native American tribes here and you can click here for a larger view.

Story of the Day. Here's a dramatic "why" story from a Dakota storyteller: Why the Wolves Help in War.

Indian Epics Today. The character of the day is Krishna's uncle, and nemesis, King Kamsa. You can read more about King Kamsa here. This shows the Goddess confronting the king:

Storybooks. Here's a wonderful storytelling experiment from the Indian Epics class a couple years ago: Post Secret Sanskrit: The Panchakanya.

India Video. The holiday of Diwali is coming up, so I thought I would share this Rama and Sita video to get ready:

Writing. Some of you are writing today, so here's a wonderful word about that: scripturient (adj.): having a consuming passion to write.

Mindset Cats. Today's mindset cat is ready to learn:

Mindset Video. With some encouraging words about growth mindset from Eduardo Briceno: Mindset and Success.

Event on Campus. There will be a performance of the sci-fi feminist rock opera Out There in Meacham tonight, 6PM-8PM (details).

October 23: Josh Kirby. Today marks the anniversary of the death of Josh Kirby in 2001, a great illustrator who is best known for the covers of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, and you might be familiar with his art for this Return of the Jedi poster; you can find out more about his life and work at Wikipedia:
