Tuesday, October 29

Today is Tuesday of Week 11. Here is a link to the Week 11 assignments (and a link to Week 12 if you are working ahead). I hope you will enjoy this week's reading! It's a storytelling week, so remember to take reading notes that will jump-start your own story later.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Mix and match. As you plan out your week, remember that you can "mix and match" assignments (regular assignments, extra credit) as you zoom in on the points you need for your desired grade. Any combination will work; just make sure you have a plan in place that will get you to the end of the semester. Here's a progress chart that can help. And another person has finished the class: congratulations to Jessica in Indian Epics for being done!

Project Stack. If you turned in your assignment on Thursday or Friday of last week, you should have comments back from me now. I'll get to work on the Saturday projects today! As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. Caitlin found an article at Writers Write about Halloween writing, and she included this very cute Halloween cat in her post:

Words. And speaking of maps, here's a word from mythology: ATLAS, a Greek Titan who eventually gave his name to books of maps. Find out more.

Indian Epics Today. And today's Indian Epics character is one of the old Vedic deities, Indra, the storm-god whose weapon is the thunderbolt, and whose vahana, or vehicle, is the elephant Airavata. More about Indra.

Story of the Day. Today's story is a Nigerian folktale that explains Why the Fish Lives in Water. According to this story, the fish used to live on the land with other animals... like the leopard.

October 29: Bhai Dooj. This Indian festival celebrates the connection between sisters and brothers; you can find out more at Wikipedia. You can follow the Bhai Dooj stream at Twitter to see greeting cards and festive messages like this one:

And here is a video with a rangoli design for Diwali and Bhai Dooj:
