Wednesday, October 30

Today is Wednesday of Week 11. Here is a link to Week 11 and also Week 12 if you are working ahead.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. If you turned in your assignment before noon on Sunday, you should have comments back from me, and I'll keep on working on Sunday assignments today. You can always check the stack to make sure I received your assignment.

Writing Center. The OU Writing Center is a fantastic resource for this class, for any other class you are taking, plus any other kind of writing you might be doing, like a graduate school statement of purpose or a scholarship application. Find out more at the Writing Center website: Hours and Locations.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. I hope those of you who have amazing Halloween costumes will share pictures in your blogs. Dorothy's church did a Pumpkin Palooza, and her son, the T-Rex, is roasting marshmallows; what a fabulous costume! The photo is from her blog post:

Twitter Stream. I wanted to share this good news about Foxtrot Games' latest Kickstarter... because this is a board game company created by Randy Hoyt, a former student in this class from way back in the day (and I mean WAY back... I first met Randy in Mythology class back in Fall 1999). So if you're wondering what a person can do with a Philosophy and a Letters degree, here's one thing you can do: you can become a successful board-game developer!

Myth-Folklore Video. Today's Myth video is from Crash Course: The Epic of Gilgamesh. It features a famous flood myth, plus other epic stuff:

Indian Epics Today. Today's Indian Epics character is Surya, the sun god. Find out more about Surya.

Indian Epics. This animation shows Rahu, the eclipse demon who chases the sun and the moon. You can read that story here

Story of the Day. Today's aetiological story is about both the sun and the moon: Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky. It's a Nigerian folktale with an ecological theme: flooding.

Storybooks. And speaking of floods, here's a Storybook with flood stories, and it's created with Twine, which lets you create stories-as-games: Flood Myths.

H.E.A.R.T.. Here's a graphic from Caro Martini to inspire your reading today; reading can take you into new worlds:

Mindset Video. And for some growth mindset inspiration, here are Janelle Monae and the Muppets:

Event on Campus. From UPB, it's Haunt the Union, a free haunted house in the Union! Today and also tomorrow (details).

October 30: Joseph Campbell. Today marks the anniversary of the death of the mythological Joseph Campbell in 1987. He is famous for his theory of the monomyth or "the hero's journey." You can read about his life and career at Wikipedia, and I've included a video below: Joseph Campbell and the Myth of the Hero's Journey which you can also see in this graphic:
