Sunday, February 9

Today is Sunday of Week 4, so that means it is the day to finish up the Week 4 assignments and, if you have time, you can get started on Week 5 too. Plus there's extra credit! See note about that below.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Mindset and Tech Tip surveys! I've mentioned Cat Jackson's survey already which you can do for Growth Mindset (it's about self-confidence), and there's a new survey about future developments at Canvas which you can do as a Tech Tip: Canvas Data and Predictive Algorithms. Plus, there's a cool new Canvas feature: you can add pronouns to your profile! Here's a link to all the Canvas Tech Tips.

Project Stack. I'll try to update the stack periodically today, so you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment. The sooner you turn that in today, the sooner you will get comments back from me next week. And on Monday there will also be lots of projects to add to the class lists! You can see the growing slideshow in the sidebar of this blog, and also in the Projects tab in Canvas.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. One of my favorite things about people's projects every semester is that I get to learn new things from the research and the stories. For example, from Cece's Storybook research, I learned about the Mayan goddess Ixchel:

Twitter Stream. Another cartoon from the genius cartoonist Ricardo Siri, aka @Liniers. Here he's told a story with no words required; just look at the picture... carefully (large version):

Storybooks. This Storybook from Myth-Folklore a few years ago is a nice example of a site built with Tumblr: Diary of a Phantom Thief.

Indian Epics Today. The character for today is the valiant Jatayu, who fought against Ravana, trying to rescue Sita. More about Jatayu.

India Video. We are about to start the India weeks in Myth-Folklore, so this video might be of interest to both classes: Rama and the Ramayana from Crash Course.

Proverbs. This is a proverb from India inspired by the Ramayana: The birth of a golden deer is impossible; nevertheless, Rama longed for the chase.

H.E.A.R.T.. Here's a wonderful cartoon from Grant Snider: Interior Life.

100-Word Stories. Today's story is another Nasruddin story: Who Are You Going to Believe? (click title for more info).

Mindset Cats. The mindset cat is taking time to explore this weekend: Delight in meandering!

HEART Video. And here's a feel-good video for the weekend: Friends Furever.

Event on Campus. There will be an Oscars Watch Party on the third floor of Union tonight, 6PM-11PM. Predict the winners and have a chance to win a movie prize basket! (details).

February 9: Paul Laurence Dunbar. Today marks the death in the year 1906 of the great African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar was born a free man in Ohio in the year 1872; both of his parents had been slaves. You can read more about his life at Wikipedia, and you can find his poetry at the Lit2Go. I've also included a short video from the Paul Laurence Dunbar House, which is now a historic site in Dayton, Ohio.
