Friday, April 10

It's....... FRIDAY! You have reached the end of Week 12, which means you have completed three weeks of this weird all-online semester. I hope things are going okay in your other classes! Here is a link to Week 12 in this class, plus Week 11 for those of you who are catching up... and you can find all the coming weeks on the class calendar.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Stay in touch! I just want to remind people that you can get in touch with me anytime about questions or problems you might be having with the class. I'm sure we can find a solution; the key thing is just to let me know if you're stuck so that we can figure something out. (See below of a great solution someone figured out to redesign this class project to cope with the new weird semester.)

Project Stack. Yesterday, I replied to all the projects turned in on Sunday, and today I'll finish all the Week 11 projects in the stack, plus as many of the early Week 12 and Week 13 assignments as I can. As always, you can check the stack to make sure I received your assignment. I read so many good stories this week: thank you!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Blog Stream. This is an example of fun problem-solving: Linsey has found herself taking care of nieces and nephews while their parents are at work, so she is going to turn her project into storytelling collaboration with nieces and nephews. So if any of you find yourselves in a similar situation, maybe this is a solution you can use: reading and writing together with the little ones.

Twitter Stream. I am such a fan of the cartoonist Ricardo Siri, a.k.a. Liniers... here's a cute animation of one of his cartoons about reading:

And for a Covid-related item, Crag Hill, a professor here at OU, shared this beautiful essay at Twitter: The Gift of Offering Nothing.

Myth-Folklore Video. Here's a Crash Course video about Mythical Cities.

Indian Epics Today. The character for today is Jambavan, the leader of Rama's army of bears. More about Jambavan. Here he is with Sugriva and Hanuman climbing a mountain:

Indian Epics. And here's a legend about Hanuman and the creation of the Ebony Tree:

India Video. Bickram Ghosh is one of my favorite musicians: Rhythm Jam.

Proverbs. And here's a beautiful proverb from Liberia about drums: An untouched drum does not speak.

April 10: Good Friday. In some countries this holiday is celebrated with "Hot Cross Buns" which are decorated with the sign of the cross; you can read more about this tradition at Wikipedia. One of the beliefs about Hot Cross Buns is that when you share a Hot Cross Bun with someone on Good Friday, you will enjoy friendship with them all year long if you say this charm: "Half for you and half for me / Between us two shall goodwill be."
