Friday, January 23 - Sunday, January 25

HAPPY WEEKEND! You have reached the end of Week 1! The Week 1 Read and Respond assignment (blog commenting) is available now, and all remaining Week 1 assignments are due on Friday or on Saturday or Sunday - please make sure you get started on those assignments soon.

Read and Respond blog comments. Now that everybody has had a chance to finish their blog posts for the week, the Read and Respond assignment for Week 1 is now available! You have been assigned two blogs to read at random. For detailed instructions and links to your assigned blogs, visit the Read and Respond assignment page, which also has a link to the page which lists your specific blog assignments.

Working on the weekend. This course is designed so that you can do all your assignments by working only on the weekends. If you want to do most/all of the work over the weekend here is what you need to do. This weekend, you would need to finish up the Week 1 assignments AND you would also need to do the reading, quizzes and blog posts for Week 2. You will then be free all week, Monday through Friday. Next weekend, you will finish up Week 2 and start on Week 3. The weekend after that, you will finish up Week 3 and start on Week 4, and so on. If you plan your schedule to do all your work on the weekends, you can manage to have absolutely nothing due for this class from Monday through Friday, leaving you free during those days to attend to your regular classes and other responsibilities. Plus, following this "weekend-only" strategy will earn you some Early Bird extra credit (see below).

Early Bird extra credit. The Early Bird extra credit is the easiest extra credit you can get: it involves no extra work - it just involves working ahead. If you are one week ahead on the reading-quizzes-blogging, you can take an extra point each week. If you are one week head on your Storybook assignments, you can take an extra point each week. You can do either or both of these Early Bird options for one or two points of extra credit every week - and while it may not seem like much, those points add up fast! Those extra points can help you to finish the class even earlier, or make up for some assignments you might miss along the way.

Storybook Stack. Some of you are already working ahead and turning in Storybook assignments that I need to read and comment on for you. If you want to check and make sure that I received your assignment, I keep a list of assignments in the Stack, which I've received but have not read yet. So, if you want to make sure that I received your assignment in the email, just take a look there and you should see your name listed. If not, please check with me! I do not update the stack or do schoolwork over the weekend. So, if you want comments from me about a Storybook assignment before the weekend, please turn it in by noon on Friday. I always do my best to read and reply on Friday afternoon to all the assignments turned in before noon.

Email over the weekend. I check email occasionally over the weekend, and I will do my best to respond promptly to any urgent problems or questions that come up. In general, though, any email that you send to me over the weekend will wait until Monday morning, when I get back to work. So, please be patient: if you do not get an answer from me during the weekend, I will get back to you promptly on Monday morning, I promise!

Sunday, January 25: Burns Night. Every year, on January 25, the great Scottish poet is celebrated by people all over the world, gathering together to drink and toast one another and to read some of Burns's marvelous poetry! You can read about the tradition of the "Burns Night" or "Burns Supper" in this Wikipedia article. I love to celebrate Burns Night... but we do not have a haggis at our house! (Those of you who have had haggis may understand why: here is what a haggis is). You can find the poetry of Robert Burns online at the RobertBurns.org website. He is most famous as the author of the words to "Auld Lang Syne" - and the famous phrase "of mice and men" comes from his marvelous poem, "To A Mouse, On Turning Her Up In Her Nest With The Plough." You can read more about Robert Burns in this Wikipedia article, which is also the source for his portrait shown here:

Thursday, January 22

Today is Thursday of WEEK 1 of class. Thursday morning, until noon, is the grace period if you forgot to do any of the assignments that were due on Wednesday.

Grace period WARNING. Some of you are already getting in the habit of treating the Grace period as if it were the "real" due date for your assignments. Please don't do that - if you treat the Grace period as the deadline, then you do not have any Grace period left! The Grace period is there for real emergencies, totally random things that happen which prevent you from finishing your work on the day that it is due. So, if the weekly assignment list says that an assignment is due on Thursday, that means it really IS DUE ON THURSDAY, and you need to finish that assignment on Thursday. Or even better, finish the assignments several days before they are due, so you are not having to stress about the deadline at all.

Ning FAQs and Tips. I want to call your attention to the list of Ning FAQs and Tips which you will find in the left-hand column of the Ning's main page. You will find information there about managing your Ning blog and also about your profile page. If there is something you want to find out which is not answered there already, please let me know and I'll add to the list of tips! You will also find some Technology Tips about your Ning Profile page, like how to add a YouTube video to your page.

3 classes = 1 Ning. As you have noticed, all three of the online courses I teach are combined into one Ning. There are a couple reasons why I did that. One reason is very practical: I am paying out of my pocket to have the Ning be ad-free, so I preferred to pay just once, instead of three times. But the more important reason is that I wanted to be able to let people interact among all three classes. You will ALL be doing Storybooks this semester - and you might have some good ideas to share with each other as you go about creating your Storybook webpages, too! Meanwhile, for the blog commenting assignment, you will just be commenting on the blogs of other people in the same class you are enrolled in - that blog commenting assignment will be ready for you on Friday, after everybody finishes up their Thursday "Storybook Favorites" blog post assignment.

January 22: The "1984" Macintosh commercial. Today, January 22, is a fun technology anniversary! On this day in 1984 -- 25 years ago! -- the Macintosh personal computer made its debut in a television advertisement during Superbowl XVIII. There is an entire Wikipedia article dedicated to this advertisement which marked a real changing point in the history of personal computing, as well as being a landmark in advertising, too. You can watch the advertisement at YouTube - and if you haven't ever seen it, it's definitely worth taking a look, and I don't just say that because I am a Mac user...! It's a great example of storytelling, told with images, all in just 60 seconds.

Wednesday, January 21

Today is Wednesday of WEEK 1 of class. Wednesday morning, until noon, is the grace period if you forgot to do any of the assignments that were due on Tuesday. You must complete the Tuesday assignments if you want to remain in this class, so please make sure you finish up all your Tuesday assignments by noon on Wednesday at the latest!

Ning blog posts. Thanks to everybody for the great Introduction posts! Your second Ning blog post (Aesop's fable) is due today, Wednesday. Then, you will have your final Ning blog post for the week (Storybook Favorites) due on Thursday. After that, the "Read and Respond" assignment will be available Friday-Saturday-Sunday, when you will be reading and commenting on the blog posts of other students in the class. If you want to leave comments for other students now, please feel free to do that - you can comment on the blog posts themselves, or you can leave comments for people on their Comment Wall. Meanwhile, the official "Read and Respond" assignment will be ready for you on Friday.

Your Ning Settings. A few of you still have the default Ning "smiley face" as your image. You will need to change that to something else - either a picture of yourself, or some other picture (a picture of your pet, as some people have done), or an image (cartoon characters are great!), or anything at all really - whatever you want to use to represent yourself here at the Ning. Also, if you used your dotted-name OU email address for your Ning account and want to change that to your regular OU email alias (or any other email address you prefer), you can do that! Just follow these instructions for Updating Your Ning Settings. You can find other Ning tips and FAQs in the left-hand column of the main page of the Ning. If there are tips or questions you'd like me to add to that FAQ list, just let me know!

My Wednesday schedule. I do most of my work during regular business hours on Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday, while scheduling my out-of-office commitments on Wednesdays. That means I may be a bit more slow to respond to your emails on Wednesday than on the other days of the week - but if you send me an email during the day on Wednesday, I'll definitely get back to you by the end of the day.

WhiteHouse.gov: The online transition. I'm sure many of you watched the inauguration festivities yesterday! One of the things I was interested to see was how the "virtual transition" would take place. And sure enough, right around noon, the old WhiteHouse.gov website was replaced by a new WhiteHouse.gov site, featuring President Obama. Back in 2001 when Clinton left office and Bush was inaugurated, I had not really paid attention to the website transition but now, with the increasing importance of the Internet in communication, I was very curious to see what would happen with the website - and the online transition went very smoothly indeed. You can visit the new website at WhiteHouse.gov - the address stays the same, but a new president has moved in to the White House online!

Tuesday, January 20

Today is Tuesday of WEEK 1 of class. For those of you who are working ahead, Weeks 2 and 3 are also available! Go to the website for your course, and then click on the link that says "Week 1 Orientation." That is where you will find the list of assignments that are due this week, including the assignments that are due today, Tuesday. Please get to work on those assignments as soon as you can.
Class announcements. There will be class announcements like these every day, Monday through Friday. You can see the announcements each day at the course website, in Desire2Learn, or at the Ning. For previous announcements, visit the announcements blog. You can also subscribe to the announcements by email!

Ning blogs and comments. One of your Tuesday assignments is to post an Introduction about yourself in your blog at the class Ning. You'll be doing two more posts at the Ning later this week... and then, after the posting assignments for the week are done, you'll have a "Read and Respond" assignment where you'll be assigned some specific blogs of other people in class to read and comment on. That's one assignment you cannot do early, since we need to wait until everybody has had a chance to finish their blog posting assignments for the week, which will not be until the end of the day on Thursday. As a result, the "Read and Respond" assignment will be available starting on Friday - I'll let you know more about that later in the week.

Storybook Stack. Some of you are already working ahead and turning in Storybook assignments that I need to read and comment on for you. I do that in the order that the assignments are turned in, and the stack of assignments can get pretty big! If you want to check and make sure that I received your assignment, I keep a list of assignments in the Stack, which I've received but have not read yet. So, if you want to make sure that I received your assignment in the email, just take a look there and you should see your name listed. If not, please check with me!

Contact me if you have questions. For many of you, this may be your first online class, and you may have a lot of questions as you get started. I hope the information that I've provided at the course website will answer most of those questions - but if something is not clear to you, or even if you are just curious about something, please send me an email! Teaching these three online courses is my full-time job, so you will find that I am very accessible online, Monday through Friday. Especially if you have a question that is preventing you from completing an assignment, please get in touch with me right away!

January 20: Inauguration Day 2009. In addition to being the first day of the semester, today is also the day of Barack Obama's inauguration, a moment of American history happening right here and now. After Obama takes the oath of office tomorrow, he will join the ranks of America's presidents. Hail to the Chief!

Monday, January 19

SPRING SEMESTER 2009. The courses are ready to go! For those of you who want to get a head start, Week 1 and Week 2 are both available now. Please go to the website for the course(s) you are enrolled in in order to get started - just click on the link for Week 1: Orientation and you will see the first week's activities if you want to start now. Week 2 is also available!

TUESDAY: Classes will begin on Tuesday. Tuesday, January 20, is the official first day of the Spring semester, and you DO have assignments due on that day. So, please make sure you get started as soon as possible. Here is the list of Week 1 Assignments - and I would definitely advise you to print out a copy so that you can check them off one by one as you complete them. If you have any questions at all as you get started, please let me know! (laura-gibbs@ou.edu)

Working ahead: Week 2. For those of you who want to work ahead, the Week 1 assignments AND the Week 2 assignments are also available now. The Week 3 assignments will become available tomorrow, on Tuesday. That represents the schedule you will see throughout the whole semester. You can work up to two weeks ahead, so when Week 1 officially begins on Tuesday, you can also be working ahead on Week 2 and also on Week 3.

Martin Luther King Day 2009. Today is a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, and in honor of all that the civil rights movement accomplished to bring America closer to its ideals of justice and freedom and equality. You can listen to the entire "I Have a Dream" speech at YouTube... if you have 17 minutes to spare this day, I hope you will choose to do that! You can also find many other materials at YouTube to watch and learn from: Martin Luther King at YouTube.com.
