HAPPY FRIDAY! You have reached the end of the Orientation week! Here is a link to the Orientation assignments, plus a link to the class calendar so that you can move on to the Week 2 assignments when you're done with Week 1. With Week 2, the regular class routine will start to take shape!

Class Procedures and Reminders

Thursday grace period. There is a grace period in Canvas this morning, Friday, for any Thursday assignments you did not finish. All the Orientation Week assignments are about getting ready for the rest of the semester, which is why they are required. So, if you didn't finish the Thursday posts, please make sure you do that this morning today.

My comments. I think I've managed to comment on all the Favorite Places posts, so today I'll start on the Introduction posts, and I'll carry on with those next week, and you all will start reading each other's Introduction posts next week too!

End-of-week assignments. Each week there are some assignments that are due at the end of the week, which means either on Friday or over the weekend, whichever fits your preferred schedule.

THANK YOU. I owe everybody a big thank you for all the work you did getting your blogs set up: now we have a blog network. You should all be really proud of that accomplishment, and I'm excited to see what you will create and share here in our own blogosphere!

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Word from Mythology. Today's word from mythology is the name of the day: FRIDAY, from the name of the Germanic goddess of married love, Frigg, the wife of Odin.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Epic Festivals of India. This Storybook is a "calendar of enchantment" which brings to life the stories and rituals of the festivals of Rama Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Krishna Jayanti, and Diwali, the festival of lights.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The Talking Beasts: A Book of Fable Wisdom by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Nora Archibald Smith. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by Harold Nelson:

Story of the Day. Today's story is a jataka, or "birth tale" of the Buddha, from a previous lifetime when the Buddha was incarnated as a Shal tree: The Spirit That Lived in a Tree.

Video: The video for today is Crash Course: Indian Pantheons. Yesterday I shared the introductory Crash Course Mythology video; this is the Crash Course video on Indian mythology. Find out more at Crash Course channel.

Growth Mindset: Now that everybody has had a chance to learn about growth mindset, I'll be sharing a growth mindset cat each day in the announcements. Today's growth mindset cat is ready for the new semester: I enjoy the process of learning. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: There will be free showings of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in Meacham tonight at 6PM, 9PM, and midnight (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

August 25: Ganesha Chaturthi. Today is the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi. Ganesha is the elephant-headed god of the beginnings of things, so that is a nice sign for the new semester. You can learn more about Ganesha and about Ganesha Chaturthi at Wikipedia, and here is a Ganesha procession in Surat:

And here's a fun video showing a simple Ganesha rangoli design:
