Thursday, August 24

Today is Thursday of WEEK 1. It's time for Introduction posts, and also an assignment I hope you will like, learning about Carol Dweck's "growth mindset" approach to learning. Here is a link to the Orientation week assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

My comments. I'm working through the Favorite Places posts, and then I will move on to the Introduction posts which I'll be commenting on this week and next. It's fun seeing all the different Favorite Places! Then, next week you will also start commenting on the Introduction posts, meeting other people in the class; that commenting assignment will be ready on next Tuesday.

Blog links and images. I wanted to remind everybody to make sure you are creating clickable links in your posts and also that you are uploading images instead of remote linking (hotlinking). For specific help with links and images, see these pages for more info: Links in Blogger and Blogger Images: Always Upload. And if you have any questions about the blogging, just let me know!

All feedback welcome! I'm really grateful when people let me know about something that is not clear, a link that is not working, etc. When you email me, be as specific as you can about the problem. If there is a problem with a webpage, include the address of the webpage in your email and/or a screenshot. That will help me find and fix the problem.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Words from India. The English word "bangle" comes from Hindi. Find out more at BANGLE.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class: Weather Gods. As a traveler in time and space, you will meet the New Zealand storm god Tawhirimatea, the Indian thunder-god Indra who defeated the drought-demon Vritra, along with the Aztec god Tlaloc and the Norse god Thor, famous for his thunder-hammer, Mjolnir.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is The White Elephant and Other Tales from India by Georgene Faulkner. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. It has beautiful illustrations by Frederick Richardson:

Story of the Day. Today's story is an Aesop's fable: The Pig, The Sheep, and the Goat. The sheep and the goat don't understand why the pig is squealing, but the pig knows that being a pig is very different from being a sheep or a goat.

Video: The video for today is What Is Myth? Crash Course World Mythology #1. Find out more at the Crash Course channel.

Event on Campus: It's Game Night in the Farzaneh Hall lounge from 6PM to 8PM: come eat snacks, play games, and meet new friends. (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

August 24: Varaha Jayanti. Today is the birthday celebration of Varaha, the boar avatar of the god Vishnu who literally saved the Earth. You can read more about the story of Varaha at Wikipedia, and this image shows Varaha lifting up the Earth on his tusks, saving it from demons:
