Monday, August 28

Today is Monday. Week 1 is now over... and Week 2 has begun. You'll be starting the actual reading and storytelling this week! You can find the week's assignments at the Class Calendar.

Update: The Week 2 blog commenting is now ready for you to do anytime this week.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Week 2. Each week, the first assignment is the reading, which comes in two parts: Part A and Part B. Check your schedule to see if you are doing any reading today; a lot of people will be starting the week today, Monday. You will find all the week's assignments here: Week 2 assignments.

Extra Credit. You can always start out the week with extra credit; you don't need to wait until the end of the week! So, for example, if you are curious about the Tech Tips, you can do the Week 2 Tech Tip, and you can even keep on going if you want, doing the Tech Tip for Week 3, Week 4, and so on. There are lots of Tech Tips to choose from: Extra Credit Tech Tips.

Project Stack. Some people turned in their Week 2 Project assignment over the weekend, which is great! While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. The Project assignment is the only one that you will turn in each week by email, and I will send you back comments by email every week.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Words from India. Today's word from India is JUGGERNAUT. The word comes from Sanskrit Jagannatha, World-Lord, an honorific title sometimes applied to Krishna, one of the avatars of the god Vishnu, although the Jagannatha is also worshiped as a separate divinity.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Indian Epics class: Dai Dreaming: A Collection of Birth Stories. This is the story of a midwife, or dai, who has watched the birth goddess herself, Shashthi, in vivid and dramatic dream visions, both beautiful and terrifying.

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Star-Names and Their Meanings by Richard Hinckley Allen. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. I'm hoping that after the eclipse last week people will be interested in stories about the stars and planets.

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Bundle of Sticks. This is a story about how a father teaches his sons the value of unity with the example of a bundle of sticks. The illustration is from Bewick's edition of Aesop's fables published in 1784:

Video: The video for today is A Bigger Definition of Creativity. It's by one of my favorite education bloggers, John Spencer.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat is using her energy to explore. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: There's an exhibit at the Sam Noble Museum through September 10: Comets, Asteroids, Meteors: Great Balls of Fire! (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

Hurricane Harvey. Normally I would put something in the announcements today about a cultural event, but what is happening in Texas is something that I am sure you are all thinking about. One of the students in this class is living in Houston this semester, and I know a lot of you have family in Texas; my cousin lives in Houston. You can follow OU's meteorologist Kevin Kloesel at Twitter for ongoing weather news:
