Tuesday, August 29

Today is Tuesday of WEEK 2, and I've re-arranged the Modules area in Canvas so the new week is on top. If you have not done any reading for Week 2 yet, today is the day to start reading! Here is a link to this week's assignments.

Class Procedures and Reminders

Project Stack. I managed to reply to all the Week 2 Project assignments that came in yesterday afternoon. While you are waiting on comments back from me about your Project assignment, you can check the stack to make sure I received your email. I'm also commenting on the Introduction posts, slowly but surely.

Extra Credit. The regular Week 2 blog commenting assignment is ready (I prepare that on Monday each week so that it is ready by Tuesday), and there's also an extra credit blog commenting assignment you can do if you are having fun exploring the blogs. Find out more in the extra credit section of this week's assignments.

Canvas messages. For those of you who are using Canvas a lot and want to send me a message via Canvas, you can do that, but I'd encourage you to send me an email instead. I will reply faster that way! Either way is good, though; I've configured Canvas so that it forwards Canvas messages to my email. You can also configure your Canvas notification preferences; here's how: Canvas Tech Tips.

The following items are for fun and exploration:

Mythical Creatures. This is kind of a Venn diagram on steroids that shows different kinds of mythical creature hybrids. Find out more (and see a full-sized version) here: Mythical Creatures.

Storybook Archive. This project is from the Myth-Folklore class, and it does involve mythical creatures: Moreau Island Labs: Supernatural Creature Laboratory. Have you heard of The Island of Doctor Moreau? In this modern Moreau story, weird creatures — including an Egungun from Africa and the Headless Horseman of American legend — have been collected and caged for scientific study. But what happens if the creatures break out of their cages?

Free Book Online: Today's free book is Sacred Tales of India by D. N. Neogi. See the Freebookapalooza blog for links and the table of contents. The illustrations are by P. Ghose:

Story of the Day. Today's story is from Aesop's fables: The Two Goats. This is a fable about two goats who refuse to give way:

Video: The video for today is by one of my teacher-heroes, Mrs. Yollis: her third-grade students all blog! Since you will be writing blog comments this week, I thought you would enjoy this advice from her adorable third-grade students: How to Write a Quality Comment. Find out more at Mrs. Yollis's blog.

Growth Mindset: Today's growth mindset cat advises you to ask questions: To learn, start by asking a question. You can find out more at the Growth Mindset blog.

Event on Campus: It's Back-to-School Cookie Decorating in Bizzell from 6PM to 7PM (details). Find out more about this and other events at the Campus Calendar online.

August 29: Radha Ashtami. This holiday celebrates the birthday of Radha, Krishna's beloved consort. You can find out more about Radha at Wikipedia, and NativePlanet has suggestions about where to go to celebrate the Radha Ashtami holiday. Here is a Radha Ashtami card:
